The Door to Darkness

The sun had begun to rise, casting a gray light over the chaos of the night as the investigation turned frantic. The officers combed through evidence, while I sat with Daniel, emotion swelling in every direction.

“What does this mean?” I asked him quietly. “What happened to Daniela?”

“The coordinator, Susana, seems frightened. We need to get more information from her,” he replied, eyes narrowing with resolve. “She knows something.”

But when we arrived at the interrogation room, Susana had retreated into silence, her eyes red and glassy. The officer pressed her. “You know where Daniela is. You’re hiding something.”

“I didn’t hurt her. I told you I was just following orders!” she cried out, her voice breaking.

Renata’s words echoed in my mind—something about a folder and a locked door. I felt an urgency building inside me, urging me toward that thread, pulling at the seams of this mystery.

“Is there a chance Daniela knew something?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Something that led to this?”

Daniel nodded. “She might have discovered those documents.”

As the pieces began to align, I could feel the walls pressing in. “We need to go back to Casa Amanecer,” I said suddenly, adrenaline coursing through me. “If there’s a chance her disappearance is connected to the camp, we can’t ignore it.”

“You’re right,” Daniel said, determination hardening his voice.

With the sun rising, the forest felt both beautiful and ominous, full of secrets waiting to be uncovered.

Finding the Truth

At the camp, the officers expanded their search, combing through the grounds filled with the soft rustle of leaves. Renata clung to me, her small fingers digging into my arm. “Can we find her, Mom?”

“We will, sweetheart. I promise.”

Then I spotted the laundry room—the room that Renata had described during her interview. There had to be something more buried beneath that facade of normalcy.

“We need to check behind the shelving,” I insisted. I could sense a rhythm in the air—a pulse of urgency that seemed to vibrate with the truth.

“You can’t go in there!” Susana cried out as she followed us, trembling now.

But I ignored her, my heart racing as I pushed aside the shelves. There it was—the door she had mentioned. Hidden, yet beckoning. The smell of bleach hit me, choking me for a moment as I grasped the handle.

“What’s behind here?” I demanded.

She backed away, shaking her head. “Please! You don’t know what’s in there!”

With a swift motion, I swung the door open. A dimly lit room lay beyond, revealing grime and a mat that seemed untouched by time. The truth was uncoiling before us, dark and terrible.

As Daniel turned to call for the police, I spotted something on the floor. A butterfly keychain lay half-hidden beneath the mat—just like the one on Daniela’s backpack. My breath caught in my throat. “Daniela’s keychain…”

The lengthening shadows whispered a truth I hadn’t wanted to hear. “They were trying to keep her from coming back,” I murmured, realizing the implications. The door slammed shut, and I stepped back, fear gripping me as the walls of the room pulsed with danger.

The story continues…
