A Heart Divided
“Alex?” Her voice trembled like glass, fragile and beautiful. I had forgotten how her very presence could disrupt my reasoning. “What are you doing here?”
I noticed the unfamiliar glow in her cheeks. It hurt. “I wanted to talk.”
“Now?” She glanced over her shoulder, and I caught a glimpse of Mia, standing a few steps behind her. My heart sank. I hadn’t imagined she would be here.
“I thought you needed to get away,” I said, struggling to keep my voice steady. “I didn’t want to intrude.”
“You’re not intruding, but I—” Sarah hesitated, her expression shifting between uncertainty and determination.
“I just want to explain,” I whispered, desperation creeping into my tone.
“What is there to explain?”
Her eyes narrowed, and the hurt radiated from her like heat. I wanted to reach out, to bridge the distance that felt insurmountable. But everything I had done stood between us like a wall.
“I was weak, Sarah. I thought leaving would help you heal.”
“You’re telling me you thought it was okay to run away? That’s your excuse?” Her voice cracked, each word layered with pain. “You think I wanted this?”
The air thickened with tension. I could see the hurt, the betrayal etched on her face, a mirror to my own guilt. I was losing her.
A Shattered Reflection
The silence stretched, heavy and suffocating. I had imagined this moment differently. I wanted closure, an understanding, maybe even forgiveness. Instead, I felt like I was peeling back the layers of our life only to reveal a putrid core.
“You could have fought for us, Alex. Instead, you picked someone else, someone who wasn't me.” Her words were a blade, cutting deeper.
“I didn’t choose her. I just—” But the words felt hollow, meaningless.
As Mia stepped forward, her face lit with concern, the weight of my actions crashed down on me like an avalanche. I hadn’t just hurt Sarah. I had shattered the very foundation of our home.
“What did you expect would happen?” Mia’s voice rose, furious and pained.
I felt trapped between their gaze, the two women who had stormed into my life, each revealing parts of me I desperately tried to hide. “I thought it would set me free,” I mumbled, remorse washing over me. “But it hasn’t.”
“No,” Sarah whispered, tears glistening in her eyes as they fell. “It trapped you instead.”
The confession hung in the air, a weight I couldn’t lift. “I’m so sorry.” But as the words left my lips, I realized they were no longer enough. My apologies felt like a drop in an ocean of regret.
