I Thought I Was Protecting My Father, But What I Discovered Changed Everything I Knew About Love and Loss

Desperation and Discovery
The night stretched on, heavy and oppressive. I sat on my bed, staring at my phone, the silence almost deafening after Maren’s shaken voice had faded. What could have happened? I felt like I was caught in a trap, each thought a jagged edge that cut deeper than the last.
I needed help. I dialed Jake’s number, my brother who always knew how to tackle the impossible. “You’re not going to believe this,” I said, urgency spilling out in my voice. “I need you to come over.”
“What’s going on?” Jake’s voice was still groggy from sleep. It didn’t matter; I explained everything in a rush. We agreed to meet in an hour, the buzz of adrenaline pushing me through the wait.
When Jake arrived, he looked concerned. “What did Maren say, exactly?” He leaned against the wall, arms crossed as I recounted her tremors, the way she had handed me her phone, the text sitting heavy in my pocket. He nodded, his expression growing serious. “We need to figure this out.”
We huddled over my laptop, scrolling through Maren’s dating history. I couldn't shake the thought that the answer lay deeper, hidden in the shadows. “Look at these messages,” I said, pointing at strange notifications that had popped up after her date with Elias. “What are these?”
Jake squinted at the screen. “It’s odd. They seem… personalized. Like someone’s keeping tabs.” The unease in his voice sent chills down my spine. We began to dig deeper, piecing together what Maren might have experienced.
Connecting the Dots
With a determined nod, Jake and I decided to go straight to the dating app where Elias had met his matches. The interface was bright and inviting, a stark contrast to the dark rabbit hole we were about to dive into.
“Let’s see if we can find anything unusual.” I scrolled through profiles, the photos flickering on the screen. A sense of dread pooled in my stomach. Each smiling face felt like a reminder of what we stood to lose.
Then it happened. My heart raced as I stumbled upon a profile that made my blood run cold: Lila. A familiar name, one that echoed in my head like a haunting refrain. “Jake, look!” I pointed, my finger trembling on the screen.
He leaned closer, studying her profile. “She vanished too, didn’t she? I remember— she wasn’t just another date.” The weight of realization settled in, an unspoken agreement that we were onto something sinister.
We scoured user reviews, and the next comment chilled me to the bone. “She has a history. Be careful. Some men are not what they seem.” I swallowed hard. “What does that mean?”
“It means there’s a pattern,” Jake said slowly. “Every woman like Maren has gone missing after these dates. We have to find her.” His intensity matched my anxious heartbeat. Just as I began to formulate a plan, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
“What now?” I fished it out, only to find Jake’s face go pale as he read a new message that had just come through. “No,” he whispered, his eyes wide. “We need to leave. Now.”
Just as I thought we were safe, Jake received a chilling message threatening our family.
