“This feels like a bad dream,” I said, my voice low and steady as I tried to process the fallout. “I thought we could work through things, but you’ve made it impossible.”

Daniel’s shoulders slumped. “I didn’t mean to hurt you—”

“No,” I cut him off, feeling the walls of our shared reality crumbling like a house of cards. “You didn’t just hurt me. You’ve hurt our daughters too.”

His eyes flickered with something close to remorse, but it was too late for apologies now.

“We need to think about the future,” I said, my voice gaining strength. “How are we going to provide for them?”

That was when Daniel’s demeanor changed entirely. “Do you think I’ll let you take them away from me?” he spat, anger surging within him.

“At this point, I think you’re more interested in yourself than in anything else,” I shot back.

“What do you want from me?” he barked, shaking his head in disbelief.

The questions hung heavily in the air, but I didn’t answer. I didn’t need to. He was on borrowed time, and we both knew it.

With the weight of the moment pressing down on me, I turned away. No more fighting. I needed clarity, not chaos. But just as I began to walk away, something caught my attention—the envelope still clutched tightly in his hand.

“I found the loan documents. I found the notice.”

“What’s in that envelope?” I asked, my curiosity igniting. “What else are you hiding?”

Suddenly, the tension shifted again. The clouds hanging over us darkened, swirling with unfulfilled promises.

“This isn’t over,” I said quietly, almost as a reminder to myself.
