I Thought I Was Losing Him, But What I Found Under His Mattress Changed Everything

Ben's Confession
As the doctor stepped out, the air felt heavier between us. Ben looked at me, his eyes bright but weary. “I’ve been feeling better lately, you know?” he said, a hint of hope in his voice.
I leaned closer, absorbing his words. “Really? You think the experimental treatment is working?”
“Yeah, I think it might be,” he continued, but I noticed the flicker of doubt shadowing his expression. “I just didn’t want to worry you with all the what-ifs.”
My heart twisted. “But why didn’t you tell me? We’re in this together, Ben!”
“I wanted to protect you,” he replied softly, pain etched in his features.
“Protect me? By keeping secrets? It feels like you’re shutting me out!” I felt the frustration rising, and my voice wavered. “What if this doesn’t work? What’s the plan then?”
His gaze dropped to his hands, fingers trembling slightly. “I didn’t want to think about that right now.”
We were teetering on the edge of something catastrophic. The silence grew thick, choking me with fear as I searched his face for something, anything that would give me hope. Suddenly, he closed his eyes, exhaustion overtaking him, and I sat there, feeling the weight of everything we might lose.
His breathing slowed, and in that moment of vulnerability, I felt the flood of emotions wash over me. I wanted to believe in a future. A future where Ben and I could be together again, without this looming darkness.
Secrets in the Journal
I stayed by his side, watching the rise and fall of his chest. The room was eerily quiet, except for the rhythmic beeping of the monitor. My eyes wandered to the bedside table, and that’s when I noticed the worn leather journal.
Curiosity piqued, I opened it, revealing his neatly scrawled entries. Each word felt like a window into his soul, revealing a side of him I’d never seen.
The ink told stories of fear—deep, paralyzing fear of dying and leaving me alone. “I can’t bear the thought of her suffering,” he had written. My throat tightened as I read the words. I couldn’t believe he thought that way.
“I want her to move on,” I read aloud, chills prickling my skin. “If the worst happens, I want her to find happiness again.”
My heart dropped. A 'backup plan'? What did that even mean? The implications twisted in my gut like a serrated knife. I couldn’t understand why he’d think this was okay.
Then I stumbled upon a particularly raw entry, where he’d poured out his grief about dying. “I can’t let her watch me fade away,” it said. “I’d rather spare her the pain.”
Before I could process what I was feeling, I heard voices from the hallway, the door ajar. A nurse and a doctor were speaking in hushed tones. My heart raced, a sense of dread flooding over me.
“He’s been secretly declining the treatment,” the nurse whispered. “I’m not sure how much longer he has…”
My breath hitched in my throat, realization crashing over me like a tidal wave. I couldn’t leave him now. Not like this.
