Breaking Point

But the confrontation with Damon didn’t bring clarity. It only deepened the cracks in my world. I felt myself retreating, each interaction laden with expectation and unspoken truths. Days slid by like oil, smooth yet oily—everything felt off-kilter.

In moments of solitude, I found myself thinking of Claire, the friend I had once cherished. I felt the weight of that loss every day. Then, one evening, as I flipped through baby books, a text from Claire appeared, pulling me from my thoughts. “Can we talk?”

I stared at the screen, hesitating. The anger still curled like smoke around my heart, but I needed answers. What was her role in this madness?

I agreed to meet at a café, pretending to care about the soft ambiance and warm pastries. But each bite felt cold as I waited. When she arrived, her face was pinched, and her expression was a tapestry of guilt and desperation.

“Felicity,” she started, glancing around as if the walls had ears. “I’m sorry.”

“Sorry for what?”

She took a deep breath, her shoulders sagging. “For everything. I never wanted to hurt you.”

“But you did.”

“I know,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I thought it was just a fling at first. I thought it wouldn’t matter.”

“Except it did.” I leaned forward, my heart hammering. “How long did this actually go on?”

“A few months before you got pregnant,” she said, eyes pleading. “I couldn’t stop it. I was drawn to him.”

“Drawn to him,” I repeated, tasting the bitterness of betrayal. “You were my friend.”

Claire looked down at her coffee, her fingers trembling. I wanted to scream, but all I could do was stare. “Why?”

“He’s charming. I'd never felt that way before.” Her confession hung between us, a weight threatening to crush me. “I didn’t mean for it to go this far.”

“That’s not an excuse.”

“I know! But he made me feel wanted, and I didn’t think about you, about our friendship.”

I wanted to lash out, to demand answers that would never come. Instead, I felt emptiness settle in my bones. “I thought we were best friends.”

“We are, Felicity! I want to make this right.”

“But how?”

“Tell me how to make it right.”

Suddenly, it hit me—what if I played my own game? What if I turned the tables? I could let her show me just how far this deception had gone. I could use this moment to find out everything.

Truth Revealed

“You want to help?” I asked, leaning closer. “Then tell me everything. When was the last time you were with him?”

Her eyes widened, and for a moment, I thought I’d pushed too hard. “A few days ago,” she barely whispered. “Nothing happened, I promise. I was just there to talk.”

But I could see it—the flicker of guilt in her eyes. She was still entangled, and that knowledge ignited something primal within me. “Then let’s make a plan.”

She blinked, confusion flooding her face. “What do you mean?”

I felt the surge of power. “I’m going to confront Damon tomorrow. I need you to be there.”

“Why? I can’t.”

“You’re not just a bystander anymore, Claire. You’ve been part of this mess.”

Her gaze dropped, and I pressed on. “You’ll be there to witness it. I need you to see how this unfolds, to face the consequences of your actions.”

“I don’t want to hurt anyone further,” she trembled. “This is already too much.”

“You’ve already hurt me.” I paused, my voice steady. “This is the only way for
