I Thought I Was Having a Baby, But I Was Just Losing My Family
Shifting Alliances
Days turned into a blur after the shower. I found myself in the nursery, staring at the blank walls, tracing outlines of dreams too familiar to be comforting. My phone became an extension of me, filled with messages and reminders of what I needed to uncover. The thrill of discovery was palpable but weighed down by the dread of what I'd find.
Late one night, I opened Damon’s laptop, the screen casting a blue hue in the darkened room. I pulled up his email. My heart pounded as I navigated through familiar folders until I found something labeled “Plans.”
Inside, I skimmed through documents that made my stomach twist. Blueprints for an apartment, utilities set up in a new name, and a timeline that lined up perfectly with my due date.
“You told me we’d start fresh, I’ll take care of everything.”
I whispered the words Damon had said so many times. But this wasn’t the fresh start I wanted. This was a betrayal unfolding in real-time. I held my breath as I clicked a thread labeled “Riverton Heights.”
Images of the layouts flooded my screen, and I saw them: Damon and Claire, smiles plastered across their faces, ready to welcome this life together—without me.
All the sleepless nights, the growing sense of unease, it all made sense now. They weren’t just planning a life that didn’t include me; they were building it off my back.
I felt like the walls were closing in again. I needed to confront them, but how could I do it without putting myself at a disadvantage? Every step of this game was a risk.
Confrontation Again
The next evening found me pacing the kitchen, the soft hum of the refrigerator a stark contrast to my racing thoughts. Damon would be home soon. I had to be ready.
With every noise outside, I felt the tension twist tighter in my chest. When the front door finally opened, it was like a release, but I also felt dread curl in my stomach.
“Hey, babe, what’s up?” He dropped his keys on the counter, the casual demeanor grating against my irritation.
“We need to talk,” I stated, my voice steady but low.
He raised an eyebrow, a flicker of unease crossing his face. “About what?”
I took a breath. “About the plans you’ve made without me.”
His face turned serious, like a mask sliding into place. “Plans? What are you talking about?”
“Don’t play coy, Damon. I saw everything.” My voice rose. “The emails, the blueprints. You and Claire have orchestrated a life behind my back.”
His jaw clenched, and for a moment, silence hung between us, thick and suffocating. “You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly,” I said, my heart thudding. “You’ve set up a new life. I’m not sure what part I’m supposed to play in it anymore.”
“You’re being paranoid,” he countered defensively. “I’m trying to do what’s best for us.”
“For us? Or for you and Claire?”
His expression faltered, and I pressed on. “How long has this been going on?”
“Not long,” he said quickly. “We were friends, nothing more.”
But the words rang hollow. I could see Claire’s face flash in front of me—the guilt, the fear. I had to press deeper. “What will happen when I have this baby? Will you just vanish with her?”
“Don’t put this on Claire,” he snapped. “She knew nothing until recently.”
That made my heart race. “You’re lying.”
“I’m not!” he shouted. “I didn’t want things to go this way.”
“But they did. Now we have to deal with the fallout.”
And beneath the anger, I felt an unsettling sense of resolve. I wasn’t losing my family; I was reclaiming my future.
