“We have to move,” Paul said, urgency crackling through his voice. My pulse quickened as I rushed to the window beside him.
A black SUV sat idling at the curb, its windows tinted like a wall of shadow. Men in dark suits exited, scanning the area with deliberate focus. My stomach twisted as recognition dawned. “Who are they?”
“The people I escaped from,” Paul replied, his expression hardening. “They’re dangerous. We need to leave before they find us.”
“But what about Diane’s wedding?” I stammered, trying to piece together this nightmare. My sister’s moment should have been filled with joy, not danger.
Paul’s eyes darted back to the street. “It was a cover, a way for us to slip out unnoticed.”
Shock washed over me. “You and Diane?” I said, barely above a whisper. “What is happening?”
Tension hung thick in the air. My heart raced with each second that passed. Was all of this a lie? A plan woven in the shadows while I clung to the hope of Paul’s return?

“We have to hurry!” Diane’s voice broke through my confusion, pulling me back to the moment. The three of us barreled out of the apartment, the door slamming behind us. My mind buzzed with disbelief.
As we reached the parking lot, I caught a glimpse of the suited men moving with purpose toward our building. My breath hitched. “They’re coming!”
“Get in!” Paul urged, pushing me toward my car as adrenaline surged through me. I fumbled with my keys, desperate to escape.
Just as we managed to slam the doors shut, one of the men spotted us, sprinting toward us with an intensity that froze my blood. “Drive!” Paul shouted, and I turned the key, the engine roaring to life.
We peeled away from the curb, the SUV in hot pursuit. My heart pounded in rhythm with the tires screeching against the asphalt. “What’s going on?” I demanded, glancing at Diane.
She hesitated, her face pale. “I knew about the danger… Paul told me everything while he was hiding.”
“You knew? Why didn’t you tell me?” My voice cracked, anger bubbling to the surface.
“I didn’t want to drag you into this! I wanted to protect you!” Tears brimmed in her eyes, but I felt the betrayal like a stab in my gut.
We barely escaped, but as we drove away, the weight of her secret suffocated me. Just as I grappled with the betrayal from Diane, my phone rang, shattering the tension in the car.
“Answer it,” Paul urged, voice tense.
Reluctantly, I picked it up. The voice on the other end sent chills down my spine, revealing a connection to my father that changed everything.
