I thought I lost everything to betrayal, but what I uncovered changed everything I believed about love and family.
The Confrontation
Kayla placed the folder on the table, sliding it halfway toward me.
“Gabriel has been stealing from the trust,” she said, her voice steady.
The revelation landed like a punch to my gut, but I shook my head in disbelief. “That’s what this is? You slept with my brother, and now you want me to believe he’s the villain?”
She took a deep breath, her eyes pleading. “He’s been draining it for almost four years. Since before we got married.”
Ellis interjected, “He forged your signature twice that I can prove, Dan. Transfers tied to a trust your grandfather set up. Your father never told you about it because he wanted Gabriel to grow into it first.”
“This sounds insane,” I responded, voice rising. “You think I’d side with a thief over my own brother?”
I could see the truth in Kayla’s eyes—the weight of every word was pressing down on her. “I flagged the activity nineteen months ago. I came to Kayla because Gabriel named her as a contact. You were away, and he was manipulating me.”
“You think I would’ve protected him?” I was yelling now. “Over evidence? Over my own name on a forged document?”
The tension in the room thickened, heavy as an anvil.
“I think you would have warned him,” she said, her voice low. “You always did.”
I slumped in my chair, the reality crashing down. I wanted to scream but instead, it turned into silence.
The Revelation
The silence stretched endlessly, filled only with my own racing thoughts. Everything felt wrong, like I was living someone else’s life. “And why should I believe any of this?”
“Because it’s true,” Kayla replied. “And I didn’t know until too late.”
Marcus shifted, his expression a mix of frustration and pity. “You’re not alone in this. Your family deceived you, Dan.”
I laughed bitterly, the sting of betrayal still fresh. “What do you want from me?”
Kayla looked at Marcus, then back to me. “We need to confront Gabriel. You’re not just his brother, you’re a beneficiary. He can’t get away with this.”
“Don’t you see?” I shouted, confusion mixing with anger. “He destroyed everything!”
“And you were a part of it, whether you realize it or not,” she said, her voice tempered but urgent. “You can’t let him win.”
I could feel the weight of the folder pressing down on me, the answers to everything I needed somehow tied to this strange reunion.
“Just tell me what to do,” I said finally, my voice a whisper, and Kayla nodded, her eyes glistening with something that looked a lot like hope.
But as we stood to leave, I noticed a stack of papers on the side table—an envelope, partially open.
I reached for it, my heart racing as I pulled out a letter, a name I never expected striking me like lightning.
“Amelia,” I read aloud, the name twisting something deep inside me. “What does this have to do with Gabriel?”
Kayla looked at me, uncertainty clouding her face. “Who’s Amelia?”
And suddenly, everything shifted again. The stones that had settled were now rolling downhill, revealing secrets I hadn’t even known to look for.
