The Encounter

Days later, Margaret’s photo arrived, reinforcing my suspicions with every pixel. I studied it repeatedly, waiting for the moment I could confront Danielle without tearing my son’s heart apart. The tension in our household was palpable; I could feel it in the walls, the furniture, even the air we breathed.

Then came the day I had dreaded. Xavier announced he wanted us to meet again, this time for dinner again at a small Italian restaurant downtown. “You’re going to love the food, Mom,” he said, excitement evident in his voice.

“Sure, sweetie,” I managed, but inside, I felt sick. How could I spend an evening gazing into the eyes of someone I feared while trying to protect my son?

As we arrived, the atmosphere was warm, candles flickering gently on the table. However, the moment Danielle walked in, my heart sank. She looked radiant in a flowing blue dress, yet the same unsettling feeling washed over me.

“You’re going to love this place,” she smiled at Xavier, her eyes sparkling. “Especially the tiramisu.”

“It's my favorite!” he exclaimed, completely oblivious to the storm brewing in my heart.

Throughout dinner, Danielle’s charm washed over everyone, filling the space with laughter. Yet I felt a knot tightening in my throat every time she touched Xavier’s hand or leaned in to whisper something funny. I wanted to scream. I couldn’t watch him fall for her again.

While he talked about future plans, I excused myself to the restroom, intent on collecting my thoughts. I splashed cool water on my face and stared at my reflection, almost daring it to tell me what to do.

Truth and Illusion

When I returned to the table, I found Xavier alone. Danielle had stepped outside to take a call. My heart raced again—this could be my chance.

“Xavier, can we talk?” I said, keeping my voice low. He looked up, puzzled.

“Sure, Mom. What’s up?”

“It’s about Danielle.”

“What about her?” His expression hardened. “Why can’t you just give her a chance?”

“Because, sweetheart, I think she might not be who she claims to be.” I hesitated, weighing my next words carefully. “You remember Margaret, right?”

His brow furrowed deeper. “What does she have to do with this?”

“She told me about a woman who has scammed young men, taken everything from them. I think…”

“You think Danielle is that woman?”

The disbelief in his voice cut me deeply. “I don’t want to scare you, but there’s a chance. You have to see the similarities!”

Before I could continue, Danielle returned, her smile fading when she noticed the tension. “Everything okay?”

Xavier looked from me to her, torn between us. “We were just talking,” he said carefully, then added, “about how much I believe in you.”

“Really?” she asked sweetly, but the gleam in her eyes felt off. I was drowning under the weight of my instincts, desperate for him to see the truth.
