“Audrey,” he said, forcing a smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes.

I turned my gaze to the framed photographs. A journey through our years together, showcasing laughter and milestones, all now tainted by betrayal.

“It’s a bit late for apologies, don’t you think?” I said, my voice steady. “You’ve been busy pretending to be someone else.”

He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “You don’t understand. I was going to tell you. I was waiting for the right moment.”

“When? After the cake? After you opened gifts?”

The absurdity of his excuses only fueled my anger. Russell had spun a life that was all smoke and mirrors, and I had played my part without question.

“I was trying to protect us.”

“Protect us?” I spat. “It’s too late for that, Russell. You’ve already destroyed everything.”

“Don’t you think overreacting is a bit dramatic?” he countered, the old charming veneer slipping as frustration broke through.

“Dramatic? My whole life just imploded, and you call it dramatic?”

Jim stepped forward, his presence oddly comforting. “Russ, maybe you should sit down.”

But Russell shook his head, the mask of control slipping further away. He was unraveling in front of us, a facade melting under scrutiny.

“I’m not going to let you ruin my birthday.”

“Your birthday?” I whispered, incredulous. “It’s no longer about you. You’ve got to face this.”
