Secrets from the Past
“You don’t understand,” the woman said, her voice trembling. “Eli was taken from me when he was just a boy, ripped from my arms.”
I felt the blood drain from my face. “What do you mean taken? What happened?”
“There were circumstances… tragic ones. I’ve been searching for him ever since.”
She looked so worn, as if the weight of the years had settled into her bones. “He was my only child. His name was not Eli—it was Jackson.”
Jackson. It echoed inside my mind like a ghost. I glanced back at the bedroom where Eli lay, blissfully unaware. “Why didn’t he ever tell me?”
“I tried to find him, but I was led to believe he was gone for good. I thought I lost him forever.”
“But Eli is… I mean, he’s happy now. We have a life together.”
“You don’t understand what’s coming,” she said, her eyes wide with fear. “He deserves to know, before it’s too late.”
Just then, Eli appeared at the doorway, his face a mask of confusion. “What’s going on?”
My heart raced as I turned to him, hoping the truth wouldn’t shatter his world. “Eli, this woman… she says she’s—”
“Who are you?” he interrupted, glaring at her. “What do you want with me?”
“I’m your mother,” she said, her voice cracking. “I never wanted to leave you.”
A Warning and a Collapse
“You abandoned me,” Eli shouted, his voice echoing in the small living room. “I can’t believe you! Why now?”
“I didn’t have a choice!” she cried, tears streaming down her face. “Your father… he was dangerous. I had to protect you.”
Eli’s fists were clenched tight. “What do you mean dangerous? What are you saying?”
“Your father is still looking for you. He won’t stop until he finds you.”
I could see Eli’s world crumbling, threads of all he believed in unraveling. “I don’t care about him,” Eli spat, his voice low and dangerous. “You’re the one who left me!”
“I didn’t want to,” she insisted, stepping toward him. “Please, there’s so much you don’t know—”
Suddenly, she gasped, clutching her chest, and crumpled to the floor.
“No!” I screamed, rushing to her side. “Help! Someone, please!”
Eli was frozen, staring down at her as panic washed over him. “What’s happening?”
“I don’t know!” I shouted back, fear gripping my heart. “Just stay with her!”
As sirens blared in the distance, the uncertainty loomed heavy, but Eli’s face had hardened into something akin to determination.
“We need to find out who I really am,” he whispered, his eyes narrowing. “And why she came back now.”
