I Thought I Knew Everything About My Husband Until a Stranger Knocked on Our Door After the Wedding

I Thought I Knew Everything About My Husband Until a Stranger Knocked on Our Door After the Wedding Save

Discovering Eli's Hidden Past

The envelope felt heavy in my hands, the weight of unspoken truths. I pulled out the documents, skimming through names and dates that felt foreign yet hauntingly familiar. Eli’s real name. A wealthy family thought to have lost him. My breath hitched in my throat.

“Eli?” I whispered, shaking him awake. His eyes fluttered open, confusion clouding his gaze. “You need to see this.”

“What is it?”

“This… this says you were adopted. That your family is still looking for you.”

His face drained of color, his eyes darting away. “I can explain,” he stammered, running a hand through his tousled hair.

“Explain what? That you’ve been lying to me?” I snapped, the betrayal coiling tight around my chest. How could he keep this from me? The foundation of our life together felt shaky, crumbling beneath the weight of his secrets.

“Please, just let me talk,” he pleaded, his voice cracking. “I escaped. It was a nightmare.”

“A nightmare?” I echoed, disbelief lacing my words. “And you thought I wouldn’t want to know?”

Entering a World of Lies

Days passed. I couldn’t shake the need to uncover Eli’s past. I visited the orphanage, recalling the faded walls and echoing laughter. The staff, older now, shuffled through memories like forgotten toys.

“He was a good boy, but his family... they never stopped looking for him,” said Mrs. Thompson, her voice thick with sympathy.

Conflicting stories swirled around me, each unraveling threads I didn’t know were there. Eli’s family was searching, but why had no one reached out? Why was he so scared? My heart raced as the truth began to pull me in too deep.

But as I dove deeper, I felt a shift in our home. Eli grew distant, his silence stark against my frantic search for answers. One night, I confronted him, desperate for clarity.

“You can’t keep avoiding this!” I shouted, my frustration spilling over.

“I’m not avoiding anything! You’re the one obsessed!” he shot back, his eyes flashing with anger.

“Obsessed? I’m trying to protect you!” My voice trembled, the air thick with tension.

Then, the phone rang. Eli answered, his voice low and urgent. I leaned in, caught snippets of a heated conversation, my chest tightening with each word.

“You need to leave me alone, Matt! I won’t go back!”

Matt? Who was Matt? I felt like I was standing on the edge of a cliff, ready to fall. Eli hung up, his expression darkening.

“What did he want?” I pressed, my heart racing.

“Just stay out of it,” Eli snapped, turning away. “I can handle my own family.”

Frustration boiled over, and as I opened my mouth to respond, he stormed out, leaving me in the deafening silence of our home. I felt utterly lost and utterly alone, doubts clawing at me.

As I stood there, stunned and betrayed, Eli's brother turned to me from the shadows of the doorway, a knowing look in his eyes.

“You have to choose: him or the truth.”
