Climbing Tensions

A personal line of credit for $60,000 had been created using Skylar’s identity. Nearly the entire amount had been withdrawn.

A second credit card had been opened with a balance of $28,400.

“According to the application, you are listed as the owner.”

Skylar shook her head. “I’ve never heard of it.”

“The documents include an electronic signature matching your name.”

The listed business address belonged to a small office suite in Coral Gables. Derek had told Skylar he rented that office for his insurance work.

She had even paid the first six months of rent because he claimed his employer would reimburse him.

“The outstanding loan balance is approximately one hundred and ninety thousand dollars.”

“You should contact the detective assigned to your domestic violence report,” she said. “This may involve identity theft, forgery, bank fraud, and unauthorized access.”

Skylar lifted the glass but could not drink.

“Was the apartment purchased before the marriage?”

“Then he cannot simply take it. But you should speak to an attorney immediately.”

Derek had not merely relied on her money. He had been constructing an entire life beneath hers.

By the time she left the bank, two detectives were waiting outside.

Detective Nina Alvarez had interviewed her briefly at the hospital. She was short, composed, and spoke in a low voice that made people listen.

Beside her stood Detective Marcus Bell from the financial crimes unit.

“Mrs. Hale,” Alvarez said, “the bank contacted us about the attempted transfer.”

Skylar handed them the folder Elena had prepared.

“Your husband’s sister is the recipient on the transfer?”

“Do you know why she needed eighty-seven thousand dollars?”

“No, but it can’t be for something good.”

Detective Bell exchanged a glance with Alvarez.

“We’ve been looking into Derek’s history,” he said. “It seems he’s been involved in questionable activities for a while.”

“We need to speak with him,” Alvarez added. “Now.”

Skylar’s heart raced. The weight of her next words felt monumental.

“You need to arrest him,” she said, finally understanding the sense of urgency.

The Final Revelation

They drove through the streets of Miami, the sun’s rays casting long shadows over the pavement. Skylar sat in the back, the air thick with unspoken truths. The detectives exchanged murmurs, the tension palpable. What if they found nothing? What if he had a clever excuse?

Arriving at the apartment, they found the door ajar. Derek’s voice floated around the corner, laced with a casual arrogance she now found sickening.

“No, I don’t know where she is! She doesn’t understand,” he shouted.

The detectives moved in ahead of her, forcing her to follow. They found him in the living room, his phone clutched tightly in one hand.

“Derek Hale?” Detective Alvarez stated more than asked, stepping closer.

“What’s this about? I don’t have time for games,” he replied, a flicker of apprehension now evident in his posture.

“You’re under investigation for attempted fraud and domestic violence,” Detective Bell declared. “We have a few questions.”

Skylar stepped forward, her heart pounding. “Derek, where’s the money?”

His eyes darted between the detectives and her, revealing desperation. “I didn’t take any money from you, Skylar. You know that! You’re just confused!”

“That’s not true. I have the proof,” she said, lifting the folder in her hands.

His smile faded, replaced by a sudden darkness. “You think this can just end for you? It will destroy you, Skylar.”

Before she could respond, his phone buzzed with a message and lit up, catching her attention.

“It’s too late, Derek. You can’t hide forever,” she said, a whisper of authority creeping into her voice.

But as he turned to flee, Skylar caught a glimpse of the screen: a name she hadn’t seen in years. “Call from Mom?”

There was something in his voice that she had never heard before—a mixture of panic and unyielding resolve. But it wasn’t the name that struck fear into her heart. It was the realization that this web of lies had not just ensnared them, but had roots into a past she thought she’d buried.

“Wait!” she shouted, but too late. Derek rushed past the detectives, shoving one aside to burst through the door.

Skylar’s voice caught in her throat as she chased after him. The world spun, and for the first time, she didn’t know which direction was up.
