Protecting the Past
I stood at the door, heart racing, watching the man retreat down the driveway. Nessa stood behind me, her face pale, eyes wide with fear.
“What was that about?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. “Did you know him?”
She shook her head, hair falling over her eyes. “No, but... he looked serious.”
“I won’t let anyone hurt you,” I promised, turning to face her fully. “But I need you to trust me. Tell me everything.”
She hesitated, biting her lip as uncertainty clouded her features. “It’s not easy, Dad.”
“I know. But I can’t help you if you don’t let me in.”
After what felt like an eternity, she nodded slowly. “Okay. Let’s sit down.”
We settled in the living room, the air heavy with unspoken truths. The walls felt like they were closing in, but I knew we needed to break the silence. I had been so focused on keeping our current lives safe, that I never fully understood the danger lurking in her past.
“What’s really going on, Nessa?” I pressed gently.
She took a deep breath, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of her shirt. “It’s about my mom. There’s so much you don’t know.”
Unraveling the Truth
“The photo Mirelle showed you…” Nessa’s voice trembled. “It was taken the night of the accident.”
My throat tightened. “You were there?”
“I witnessed her… involved in something bad. Something dangerous.” Her eyes darted away, as if the memory were a shadow she couldn’t face. “I saw what happened.”
“What do you mean?” I pressed, desperate to pull her words into the light.
“It wasn’t just an accident, Dad. My mom’s death… it was a setup. They were trying to protect me.”
My mind raced. “Protect you from what?”
“From what she was mixed up in,” Nessa said, her voice barely above a whisper. “A criminal organization.”
I felt as if the ground had shifted beneath my feet. “You’re saying she was part of a crime?”
“Yes. And now, they might know I’m alive. I’m a witness to everything.”
As I absorbed her revelation, the doorbell rang again, sharp and demanding. My heart dropped. I knew what it could mean. “Stay here,” I instructed, fear gripping me.
I opened the door cautiously. Two officers stood on the porch, their expressions serious. “We need to ask you some questions about someone close to you,” one said, and I felt the world spin as the implications settled in.
