I Thought I Could Run from My Lies, but Holding My Son Revealed the Truth I Couldn’t Escape

Section 5

Ray’s heart raced as he stumbled into the living room, the envelope trembling in his hands. He tore it open, his breath hitching as he pulled out the medical documents. As the words blurred into focus, a chill crept down his spine.

Sterility.

It hit him like a freight train. He staggered backward, the weight of the world crashing down on him. All those months of anger towards Lucy, all those accusations—he had been blind. Lucy had never been the problem. It was him.

“No, no, this can’t be true,” he whispered, his voice cracking.

He felt trapped, the walls closing in as the realization spread like poison. The boy he held in his dreams—the son he thought was his—was nothing more than a cruel mirage. He had to confront Valerie. He had to know.

Racing to her apartment, each step grew heavier, laden with dread. He flung the door open, expecting to find her alone, ready to face the storm together. But there, in the dim light, sat Valerie—laughter ringing from her lips, her eyes sparkling like she had won a prize.

And beside her, David.

Confusion snared him. How could this be? They looked so comfortable, the distance he’d felt from both of them now closing in like a vice. Betrayed, he stood frozen.

“Ray,” Valerie said, her voice a taunting melody. “You’re just in time for the real surprise.”

“What…” Ray’s voice trailed off, dread wrapping around him. He couldn’t bear to hear the truth. He turned on his heel, the room blurring as despair engulfed him. The betrayal spiraled deeper than he ever imagined.

Section 6

The confrontation replayed in his mind, a loop of agony. The pieces fell into place with horrifying clarity. Valerie’s plans had been crafted from the beginning, a web of deceit spun around him as he foolishly chased love and fatherhood.

“It was never about you, Ray,” the memory of her words echoed cruelly.

Lucy’s text flashed in his thoughts—“Today I also received my results.”

Suddenly, it all clicked. The pregnancy tests, the timing, the birthmark now etched into his memory with iron; he couldn’t father a child, yet she had played him as if he were the man she needed.

“I was just a pawn,” he murmured, horrified by the final truth. The child he had imagined, the life he had fantasized about, was all a ruse. Valerie had used David, weaving their lives with lies and leaving him in the dark.

As panic surged in his chest, he felt utterly lost. Both women had manipulated him, and he was left with nothing but the ruins of what he thought was his life. The son he thought was his was never meant to be.
