Shifting Power

The hospital room stood still, the tension thick enough to be cut with a knife. It struck me how much had led to this moment. I thought of the countless ways I had bent to Evan’s will. The times I had dismissed my own sanity to keep peace.

“You’re a monster,” I whispered, voice steady but filled with a weight heavier than I had carried before.

“And you’re playing with fire,” Evan shot back, his rage barely contained. “Don’t forget who has the power here.”

But I held all the cards now, and I could feel them tightening in my grip. I remembered the photos Simon urged me to gather, the voice notes I hadn’t erased. When had I started to see him as a monster instead of my husband? Was it the first bruise or second? Or was it the day he began to dictate my reality?

Before I could dwell on the past, the doors opened again, and two police officers stepped inside, their presence both intimidating and grounding. I knew Simon had called them.

“What’s going on here?” one of the officers asked, glancing between us. His gaze was sharp, taking in the room’s atmosphere.

“Family dispute,” Evan sneered, attempting to reclaim control. “Nothing to worry about.”

But the officer’s focus shifted toward Simon. “You wanted to report something?”

“Everything,” Simon said, bobbing his chin toward me.

“The Harlan family is about to face the consequences of their actions.”

My heart raced. Would I finally be free of their grip? Would my son inherit a home free from fear?

Evan’s composure slipped further. “You can’t take my family from me,” he protested.

“You’ve already taken everything from her, Evan,” Simon said, steel in his voice. “Now it’s your turn.”
