I Stood in the Bathroom, Seeing My Six‑Year‑Old Self, and Realized Love Was About to Shatter My Empire

I Stood in the Bathroom, Seeing My Six‑Year‑Old Self, and Realized Love Was About to Shatter My Empire

The Mirror and the Boys

“Don’t you dare—” the woman hissed, her voice slicing through the steam, “…you know what you’re doing.”

I stepped into the men’s room of the Back Bay restaurant, the scent of polished chrome and lemon soap sharp in my nose. My tie was askew, my thoughts on the glass‑roofed conservatory where I was supposed to drop a diamond into Sloane Barrett’s palm.

The mirror reflected a man in a navy suit, cuff links glinting, the weight of a ring hidden in my jacket. Then the four little boys at the sinks stared back—navy sweaters, khaki pants, hair slicked back the way I used to wear it.

One lifted his hand, sliding it behind his neck in a gesture I knew as intimately as my own heartbeat.

“How old are you?” I asked, voice barely above the hum of the exhaust fan.

“Six,” a boy answered, his smile wide, the word echoing like a gunshot.

Six. The number hit me harder than any bullet ever could.

“Mia! Get your brothers in here, quick!” The voice came from the hallway, frantic, the same Mia who once made me want to abandon everything.

My hand twitched toward the hidden ring, then stopped. The boys bolted toward the door, tiny shoes squeaking on tile.

I stood rooted beside the mirror, watching the reflection fragment into four copies of my six‑year‑old self. The past was demanding attention, and the future I’d plotted began to unravel.

Mia’s Accusation

The bathroom door burst open, and Mia stormed in, eyes wild, hair damp from the steam.

“Get those boys to the back room, now!” she snapped, voice cracking like a whip.

I lunged for the pocket where the ring lay, fingers brushing the cold metal, but the cuff links on my wrist caught a stray shaft of light.

She froze, eyes narrowing on the sparkle.

“You think you can hide that from me, Dominic?” she hissed, stepping closer, her breath hot against my cheek.

“Mia, you don’t understand—” I started, but she cut me off.

“Don’t lie. I know about Barrett. I saw the ledger on his desk. You’re selling our children’s future for a diamond.”

My throat tightened. The boys were silent, watching the showdown, their small faces a mirror of my own lost innocence.

She lifted a hand, pointing a trembling finger at the cuff links.

“You promised me loyalty. You promised our kids a life away from this blood‑money.”

Before I could answer, a cold metal glint flashed from her coat—a gun, aimed straight at my chest.

“Give me the ring,” she snarled, “or I’ll lose everything you’ve tried to protect.”

At that moment the building’s fire alarm shrieked, red lights flashing, and the lights snapped out, plunging us into darkness as the vault’s door loomed behind us.

Section 3 – The Vault Beneath the Tiles

When the boys slipped through the narrow gap behind the third sink, I felt the floor vibrate under my shoes.

“Come on, Dominic,” the oldest whispered, his voice a thin echo against the grout.

I followed, my hand sliding across cold tiles until a loose slab gave way with a soft click.

A breath of stale, metallic air brushed my cheek as the hidden door swung inward, revealing a stairwell swallowed in darkness.

The descent was a single, echoing step: the stone walls slick with years of neglect, the scent of rust and dust filling my lungs.

At the bottom, a vaulted chamber yawned, lit only by a flickering bulb that hummed like a dying insect.
