As I walked into the restaurant, the dim lighting did little to ease the tension in my chest. Julian greeted me with a smile, but it felt rehearsed, like he was putting on a show. I could almost hear the ticking clock in my mind, each second reminding me of what I had discovered.
“How was your day?” I asked, keeping my tone light as we settled into our booth.
“Busy, as always,” he replied, glancing at his phone yet again. The screen lit up his face, and I noticed a flicker of concern in his eyes before he quickly masked it.
“Everything okay?” I probed, feigning innocence.
“Just work stuff,” he brushed off, but I could sense the unease beneath his surface. My fingers drummed on the table, the urge to press harder gnawing at me. “How about you?”
I took a breath, searching for a safe question. “Have you made any progress on that new deal?”
He shrugged, chewing his lip, his focus wavering as his phone buzzed again. I could feel my palms growing clammy. What deals? What new plans?
Excusing myself, I headed toward the restroom, but my mind was racing with far more than just the need for a moment to breathe. As I passed by the bar area, I heard Julian’s voice, low and urgent, with the unmistakable flair of familiarity.
“I can’t afford any slip-ups now, especially not with her.”
The woman’s laugh echoed in my ears. “She’ll be out of the picture soon enough. Just stay the course.”
My heart dropped. I leaned against the wall, disbelief cutting through me. Their conversation revealed layers of betrayal I hadn’t anticipated. Were they genuinely that confident I wouldn’t fight back?

Returning to the table, my heart raced, pounding against my ribcage as I settled back into my seat. “Julian,” I began, my voice steady, “I have some concerns about your new projects.”
His eyes narrowed, but he smiled, the kind of smile that felt more like a warning than comfort. “What do you mean?”
I pushed onward, feigning casual interest. “I’ve heard some chatter about financial adjustments. Are we still secure?”
His brow furrowed for a moment, just a flicker of tension. “Of course, everything is under control.” I noticed his fingers tapping nervously on the table. His usual calm facade was cracking.
“And the house?” I pressed, watching his reaction closely. “I mean, the renovations and everything?”
He stalled, the air thick with unspoken words. “We’ve got enough equity to manage it,” he replied too quickly.
“Julian,” I breathed, “are you sure that’s all there is to it?”
Just as I thought he might slip, his phone buzzed one last time. He glanced at the screen, a shadow of panic crossing his face. “I need to take this,” he muttered, rising hastily. I watched him stride out, and the moment that door swung shut behind him, a whirlwind of thoughts swirled in my mind.
Reaching for his phone, I felt a desperate urgency swell within me. I needed to uncover the truth, now more than ever. But before I could access anything, the door swung open, and Julian stepped back in, eyes locking onto me. My heart raced as I held his phone, and the look in his eyes signaled that the game had escalated far beyond my initial betrayal.
