I Spent 41 Years Longing for My Daughter, Then She Knocked on My Door on My 60th Birthday
The Story Unraveled
“I was still a child myself when I had you,” I began, my voice catching. “I was nineteen, and my mother forced me to give you up. It was a closed adoption, they told me you’d be fine… that you’d have a better life.”
She winced but didn’t look away. “So you never knew anything about me?”
“No, not until a few years ago when I tried to find you. Your file was sealed. I didn’t even know how to look.”
“And you never tried again?”
Frustration bubbled up inside me. “It was too painful! Every birthday, every year, I wished for you, but as life moved forward, it became harder to keep hoping.”
“Are you sure you wanted me?” she pressed, emotion surfacing in her voice, and I felt my insides twist.
“Yes! I wanted you more than you could know!”
“Then how could you just let go?”
Her words stung like ice water against my skin. The walls felt like they were closing in. “Because I had no choice!” I shouted, anger bubbling up, an old hurt surfacing. “They wouldn’t have let me keep you. I was a child; I had nothing to offer you.”
She looked away, crossing her arms tightly. The silence swelled, thick as fog. I hated feeling exposed, raw. “I thought I could be better for you someday.”
The Shocking Turn
“You could have given me a chance! You still could, now!” her voice cracked. The rawness of her plea pierced through the air.
I wanted to promise her a future, but the truth loomed larger than either of us wanted to face. “I can’t even understand how to come back into your life!”
Just then, a text chimed on my phone from an unknown number. Distracted, I pulled it out, trying to ignore the tension simmering in the room. My heart tightened as I read the message, the words pulling me from our emotional battlefield.
“I know more than you think. Don’t act surprised.”
My blood ran cold. I looked back at her, confusion twisting in my gut. “I—who is this?”
“What’s wrong?” she asked, leaning forward, her curiosity suddenly piqued.
“It’s a message,” I said, still staring at the screen. My fingers trembled as I typed back, asking for more information. My mind raced—was this about her? About our past?
Before I could respond, another message popped up that made my heart leap, and not in a good way. “You don’t have to hide from the truth.”
“What does this mean?” The questions tumbled out, each more frantic than the last.
My daughter watched, worry etched on her face. “Is it about me?”
“I—”
But I couldn’t finish. My heart thundered as I realized I had opened a door to a world far darker than I could have imagined.
