I Spent 18 Years Resentful Until My Son Gave Me a Letter That Changed Everything I Thought I Knew

I Spent 18 Years Resentful Until My Son Gave Me a Letter That Changed Everything I Thought I Knew Save

3. The Call

“Hello?” The voice on the other end was distant yet familiar. I nearly dropped the phone. “Arthur?”

It was her. Goldi. The name hung in the air like a dark cloud about to burst. “I need to talk to you.”

“After all these years?” I barely managed to keep my voice steady. I could feel Leo’s eyes on me, wide with surprise.

“I know it’s unexpected, but I need you to listen,” she continued, her tone urgent. “Can we meet?”

“Why now?” The question slipped out, edged with years of unresolved resentment.

“It’s about Leo,” she said, the name hanging in the air between us. My breath caught. Had she come back to claim him, to rewrite our story?

“What about him?” I could feel my heart pounding, each beat echoing my anger, my confusion.

She hesitated. “I didn’t just leave because of him. I couldn’t handle my own demons. But I’ve changed.”

“You think you can just show up and everything will be fine?” I shot back, every word laced with pain. “He’s my son.”

I could hear her exhale, a faint sound. “I’m not asking for forgiveness. I just want a chance to explain.”

I looked at Leo. His eyes flickered with hope and skepticism, the mix of emotions swirling in a way that reminded me of the very first doctor’s visit. What if she had changed? What if this wasn’t just another attempt to tear us apart?

“Fine—where?” I spat out, regretting the urgency in my voice.

But unbeknownst to us, what was set in motion would pull us into a whirlwind of truths we were not prepared for.

As I hung up, the silence settled like dust. “Dad?” Leo's voice sliced through the stillness. “Are you okay?”

“I don’t know.” I crumpled the letter in my hand, the edges digging into my palm. I couldn’t recognize my own emotions. “I’ll talk to her. But there are things she’s left unfinished.”
