What Remains

After I finished the letter, silence hung like smoke around us. Adam’s face was pale, while Madison's expression shifted from anger to something resembling fear. Just then, Mr. Kent slid a piece of paper across the table toward me. “This is a detailed account of the expenses Walter reimbursed you for, Gwen.”

“Is this some kind of sick joke?” Adam hissed, his fists balling up in anger.

“I’m not the one who made this reality,” I said, my voice steady. “Walter wanted to repay me for the sacrifices I made.”

Madison leaned close, almost threatening. “You took advantage of a sick man.”

“I took care of your father, Madison. You never did.”

Her lips pressed into a tight line, and the conversation began to turn, like a pendulum swinging. Suddenly, the power dynamics shifted. I had facts, and they had nothing but their assumptions. Anger bubbled beneath the surface like a pot about to boil over.

I could sense the tension building as Adam’s hand gripped the folder tightly. “Why should we trust you? You could’ve manipulated him into this.”

“Trust me? I shouldn't have to earn that trust after a decade and a half of love.” I was losing my composure, my emotions pouring out. “All I wanted was to care for him.”

Silent Judgment

In the following weeks, after Walter's death, the atmosphere grew heavier. The funeral was a blur of black clothing, half-hearted condolences, and conversations filled with unspoken accusations.

Madison and Adam floated like dark shadows. They were watching me, judging my every interaction. I could hear their whispers beyond the fold of my grief. “Look at her. She’s an actress, just waiting for her next role.”

Each glance pierced deeper than any words. But I kept my chin up. I knew I had to be strong for Walter. He wouldn’t have wanted me to shrink beneath their scrutiny.

“They’ll never understand,” I told myself.

Weeks passed, and just as I felt the weight of the world beginning to lift, a phone call shattered the calm. It was Mr. Kent. “Can you come by the office?”

There was urgency in his voice, a tone I hadn’t heard since Walter's illness had taken a turn for the worse.

Heart pounding, I walked into the office, anxiety knotting my stomach. What more could I possibly lose? Mr. Kent gestured for me to sit. “Gwen, there’s something I need to show you.”

I felt my pulse race. “What is it?”

Mr. Kent opened a drawer, revealing a second envelope. “This is about Walter’s estate.”
