I Signed the Custody Papers and Chose Power Over Their Betrayal, Revealing Who I Truly Am

I Signed the Custody Papers and Chose Power Over Their Betrayal, Revealing Who I Truly Am Save

Call to the Empire

I lifted the newborn against my chest, the sweet scent of her skin mixing with the antiseptic sting of the ward.

"Dad," I whispered into the receiver, voice steadier than I felt.

His calm voice cut through the hospital hum.

"Rebecca, I'm on my way. Lawyers, security—everything. Hold tight."

He didn't need to ask why; I could hear the click of his desk, the rustle of documents.

Across the room, Nathaniel and Cordelia froze, their eyes flicking to the phone as if the air might change.

"What?" Nathaniel muttered, voice low, trying to mask his anxiety.

Cordelia's smile faltered, a thin line of fear crossing her features.

I pressed the pen into my hand, feeling the weight of the moment.

"Give me the pen," I said, and they watched, helpless, as I set the call to end.

The room seemed to shrink, the hospital lights harsh as judgment.

Counterstrike in the Corridor

Within minutes, the doors swung open. Two men in sharp suits—Michael's attorneys—entered, followed by a discreet security team.

One of them placed a thick folder on the tray table, the paper's crispness stark against the thin hospital blanket.

"Ms. Sinclair," the lead lawyer said, voice measured, "we have a counter-demand." He slid a sheet toward me.

The document outlined the Ashford family's illegal mortgage practices, threatening to expose every hidden clause and offshore account.

My pulse quickened. I read the bolded line: “Immediate cessation of custody relinquishment; restraining order pending investigation.”

Without hesitation I signed the temporary restraining order, the pen's ink sealing a shield around my newborn.

Behind me, Nathaniel lunged at the desk, fingers clawing at the paper, his face pale as the officer in his uniform stepped forward.

"Sir, you need to step back," the officer said, hand resting on his holster.

He clapped a set of handcuffs onto Nathaniel's wrists, the metal cold against his skin.

Cordelia tried to slip away, but the security detail blocked the exit, their grips firm.

Police officers moved in, fingers tightening around her wrist as she shouted, "This is a mistake!"

Everything froze—the hum of machines, the soft whimper of my baby, the distant echo of my father's promise.

They were handcuffed, the room a tableau of betrayal, leaving me stunned, the future of my child hanging in the balance.

Cordelia's Offer and the Nurse's Defiance

When Cordelia slipped the envelope onto the nurse’s station, she whispered, “Make sure these papers never reach his desk.”

The nurse, Elena, glanced at the glossy pamphlet with the Ashford crest and the sleek pen inside.

“You think a bribe will buy my silence?” Elena’s voice was low but steady.

“It’s not just padding the bottom line,” Cordelia replied, pushing the pen forward. “It’s ensuring the custody papers disappear, that the restraining order never lands.”
