“Hello?” My voice trembled as I answered, gripping the phone like a lifeline. The line was quiet, too quiet, until I heard his breathing. Heavy, anxious.
“Jamie, what did you send?” Jake’s voice sliced through the silence like a cool breeze on a summer day.
“Just a little something to celebrate your big day,” I replied, forcing nonchalance. But the adrenaline coursed through me like electricity.
“This isn’t funny. You’re crossing a line.”
I let out a hollow laugh. “Crossing a line? You’re the one who took everything from me.”
“What do you mean?” His voice tightened. I could almost see his brow furrowing as confusion clouded his thoughts.
But I had no intention of laying my cards on the table. Instead, I pressed on. “What did you think would happen, Jake? Living with a lie?”
“Don’t make this worse,” he warned, and I could hear the tension in his voice, the warning that made me quiver with a strange thrill.
“Just open the flash drive,” I said finally, my heart pounding. “You’re in for a surprise.”
Before he could respond, I hung up. I needed to let the weight of that exchange settle like a stone in his gut. I grabbed the drink again, taking a deep swig, but my heart was racing. I checked my phone again; no messages. Not yet. Time felt suspended, the world outside my window dimmed into shadows.
Section 4
It was almost surreal, waiting for the fallout. I imagined Jake sitting there, the marriage certificate spread before him like a damning document. Could he feel the betrayal? Did Lisa know what I had sent?
The minutes bled into hours and I paced, the silence in my apartment amplifying every creak and groan. Then, the phone buzzed again, tearing through my thoughts like an alarm.
Another message from Jake: “You’re not going to believe what I found—”
But the message was cut off. I felt a jolt of panic; something had happened. Something must have gone wrong. I didn’t know how to interpret that sudden silence.
Before I could gather my thoughts, another notification chimed: “Video received.” I stared at the screen, the swirling sense of dread creeping back in. Without thinking, I clicked play, barely braced for what I would see.
What unfolded was chilling, a video of Jake and Lisa, clearly recorded in their home. There, in the warmth of their living room, Jake held a piece of paper, a letter in his hand.
“You lied to me,” he said, his voice trembled as he turned the camera on Lisa. “You’re still married.”
Her face paled, a patchwork of shock and guilt, and I felt the satisfaction swell within me. But the twist of the knife came as she stammered out a response. “I was going to tell you, just...give me time!”
Time. The word hung heavy in the air. I hadn’t anticipated getting this glimpse into their broken reality. But just as I was about to revel in the moment, Jake’s expression shifted. He turned the camera back to himself, his face a mask of despair.
“You don’t understand. This isn’t about you or me. This is about everything.” The gravity of his words crashed against me. My triumph wavered as he continued, “Mom and Dad are involved, too.”
