I Saw My Ex‑Wife on the Highway with Twins Who Looked Exactly Like Me and My World Crumbled

I Saw My Ex‑Wife on the Highway with Twins Who Looked Exactly Like Me and My World Crumbled Save

Back at the Office

My hands still trembled on the steering wheel as I slipped the key into the lock of my glass‑fronted office.

The sleekness of the lobby did nothing to quiet the echo of the highway, the image of Laura and the twins looping in my mind.

“Grant?” a voice called from the reception.

Marcus Reed stepped out of the shadows, his coat the color of a midnight sky, eyes sharp as a hawk.

“You said you could dig into the money and the necklace,” I said, trying to sound calm.

He nodded, sliding a thin file across the polished desk. “I’ve already pulled the bank statements from the last six months. There’s an account—no name, just a routing number—linked to the birth certificates of two infants born a year ago.”

My stomach tightened. “The twins?”

“Exactly. The deposits line up with the dates the babies appeared on the highway. Someone’s been funneling cash.”

Marcus tapped the file. “I’ll follow the trail. If there’s a hidden account, we’ll find it. And the diamond… I’ve got a lead on a pawnshop that took a similar piece last month.”

My mind raced, the office’s polished surfaces reflecting a future I hadn’t imagined.

“Do it,” I whispered. “Find whatever they’re hiding.”

Serena slipped into the doorway behind me, her eyes locked on the screen of my phone, unreadable.

The Parking Garage Footage

Marcus handed me a tablet, the screen flickering to life with grainy surveillance footage.

It was a dimly lit parking garage, the kind where shadows cling to concrete pillars.

Laura emerged from a stairwell, her worn shoes scuffing the slick floor, a bag slung over her shoulder.

A man appeared from the opposite side, his face obscured by a hood. A faint glint caught the light—tattoo ink on his forearm, a dragon coiled around a dagger.

Marcus whispered, “That’s the mark of the Viper Syndicate.”

My anger flared, hot and sharp. “She was dealing with them?”

Serena stood just beyond the glass wall, arms crossed, her expression a mask of stone.

The camera panned as the man approached Laura, their hands brushing. He slipped something thin and sealed into the inner pocket of her bag.

The envelope was crisp, the logo of a shipping company embossed on its seal.

Laura glanced up, caught the faintest tremor in his eyes, then turned and walked away, disappearing into the darkness.

The footage cut to static just as the man’s silhouette vanished.

Marcus leaned forward, his voice low. “That envelope is the key. It’s what she was protecting.”

My heart hammered. “What’s inside?”

The screen went black, leaving only the echo of the garage’s empty hum.

We both stared, the unanswered question hanging in the air.

“We need to find that envelope,” Marcus said.

And the screen remained dark, the mystery sealed in that final frame.
