Seeking Help

Gabriel drove through the quiet streets, the night heavy with unspoken fears. He couldn't shake the dark images of Lucas's bruises from his mind. The desperate need to protect his son fueled his determination as he pulled up to Mrs. Thompson's modest house.

When he knocked, the door swung open almost immediately, revealing the familiar warm smile of Mrs. Thompson. “Gabriel! What a surprise!” she exclaimed. But her smile faded as she saw the worry etched on his face.

“It’s about Lucas,” he said, his voice tight. “I’m scared something’s really wrong.”

They settled at her kitchen table, a place filled with the scent of baked goods. “What’s going on?” she asked, concern in her eyes.

Gabriel took a deep breath and recounted Lucas's story, each word weighing heavily on him. Mrs. Thompson listened intently, nodding as he spoke. “I’ve seen him recently,” she said softly. “He looked so thin. And I noticed bruises on his arms.”

A chill ran down Gabriel’s spine. “You saw them?” he pressed.

“Yes. He didn’t say how he got them, but...” Her voice trailed off, a mix of empathy and fear in her expression.

“I didn’t know. I’m so angry at Candice!” Gabriel's frustration bubbled over. “I need to protect him. I can’t let this go on.”

“You must act quickly, Gabriel. If she’s capable of this neglect, who knows what worse things she might do?”

With her words echoing in his mind, he felt a surge of urgency. “I’ll do whatever it takes,” he vowed, his determination solidified. “Lucas deserves better.”

Confrontation in the Dark

That night, Gabriel couldn't sleep. Instead, he slipped into the living room and pulled out his phone, reviewing the recordings he had taken earlier. The image of Lucas’s bruised arms replayed in his mind like a haunting melody. He felt sick as he listened to his own voice trying to soothe his son, all while knowing the truth behind those wounds.

As he scrolled through the videos, his heart raced. Then he found them—videos from Lucas’s phone. Each clip unveiled more layers of torment, showing not just physical abuse but also the insidious manipulation from Candice and Wyatt. Each interaction revealed a web of control he hadn’t fully grasped.

“I can’t believe this,” he muttered, breath hitching in his throat. “They’re doing this to him?”

Just as he plotted his next move, a sudden knock echoed through the house, freezing him in place. The sound was hollow, ominous. Who could it be at this hour?

With shaky hands, he approached the door, heart pounding in his chest. Lucas appeared in the hallway, a look of confusion clouding his eyes. “Dad?” he whispered, glancing nervously toward the door.

Gabriel opened the door a crack, peering out into the darkness. The last person he expected stood on the porch—Wyatt, with a smug grin plastered on his face.

“Just wanted to check on Lucas,” he said, leaning on the doorframe, his demeanor a mask of false innocence. Suspicion crawled over Gabriel's skin.

“What do you want?” Gabriel asked, tension coiling in his gut.

“Just seeing if he’s okay. Heard he’s been struggling,” Wyatt replied, too casual, too rehearsed.

Before Gabriel could respond, a chilling voice sliced through the air from the back of the house. “What’s going on in there?” Candice’s voice floated down the hallway, sharp and accusing.

Gabriel’s heart dropped. The realization hit him hard—he was caught in a web of manipulation and danger. Lucas’s wide eyes met his, and in that moment, nothing felt certain anymore.

The story continues…
