Shifting Tides

As I drove home from the courthouse, the silence in the car weighed like a thousand forgotten words. June sat in the back, staring out of the window, while May and Rose exchanged quiet glances. The atmosphere vibrated with unspoken thoughts. I needed to know what they were feeling, so I decided to break the silence.

“How was school today?” I ventured, but they all shrugged. I fought the urge to scream. What could I say that wouldn’t remind them of the court case hanging over us? The uncertainty tasted sour on my tongue.

After a few minutes, Rose broke the silence, her voice barely a whisper. “If we do this… what happens next?”

I glanced in the rearview mirror, considering how to respond. “That depends on how you feel about it. This is your choice.”

May abruptly turned to June. “What if she tries to take us away?”

“She can’t. She walked away,” June said, her tone steady but with a hint of fear. “But it’s not just her. What do we want?”

As the question hung in the air, my mind raced. I thought of the expensive gifts. How had she managed to slip back in? I consulted that tight ball in my chest, which throbbed with old hurt and fresh worry. Their lives were finally on a smooth path. I didn’t want it interrupted.

When we arrived home, I found myself staring at that familiar door, the one I had opened countless times, now suddenly heavy with doubt. My thoughts collided. I couldn’t lose them to her, but what if they wanted to go?

June shuffled by me, heading straight for her room. I wanted to follow her, but fear kept my feet planted. I thought of all the dinners we shared, the laughter and stories—and I realized they were more than just my family; they were the best parts of me.

That night, I lay awake, trapped in a twisted web of memories and fears. I could feel my heart racing against the pain of losing everything I had fought for.

Confrontations and Revelations

The following weeks were a blur of tension. The girls were distant after the courthouse, their secret alliances with Lisa sparking new fears. I felt like a ship caught in a storm, desperate to navigate the waters but unsure of where to steer.

I took them to the park one afternoon. The sun blazed overhead, yet shadows lurked beneath the trees. With my hands in my pockets, I watched them play, laughter bubbling up like a spring. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that this carefree moment was a cover for the brewing storm.

“Dad?” May approached, her voice laced with hesitation. “Can we talk?”

“Of course,” I replied, forcing a smile. The knot in my stomach twisted tighter.

Rose joined us, her brow furrowed. “We’ve been thinking. Maybe… maybe we should meet her again?”

“What? No!” I barked, instantly regretting the snap. “You know what she did.”

June stepped forward, her voice strong. “But we want to hear her side. We deserve to know.”

“Deserve?” I echoed, feeling my fists clench. “What you deserve is a mother who sticks around, not one who runs away and sends gifts.”

Silence thickened between us. “None of us are kids anymore,” Rose said. “We’re old enough to know.”

“You don’t even know her!” I nearly shouted, the desperation rising within me.

“But she’s still our mother!” June pressed, her demeanor hardening. “You can’t erase that!”

My heart sank. How did we reach this point? I felt as if I stood at the edge of a cliff, with nothing to hold on to. “You don’t understand the danger of letting her back in.” But my voice faltered, the truth weighing heavily on me.

“Danger?” May whispered. “Or just fear of losing us?”

I turned away, unable to face them. I thought I knew their hearts, but this new longing was more than I could handle.

The story continues…
