I tore through the church, my heart racing with fear. “Noah!” I called, but only silence answered me. It felt like I was running through a dream, the decorations around me blurring as I searched for him.
Finally, I pushed open the door to the back room and found him alone, sitting on the floor, staring at a faded photograph of us from our childhood. His face, usually so expressive, was shrouded in shadows.
“What if I’m a burden to you?” he murmured, his eyes brimming with uncertainty.
My heart twisted. “Noah, you’re not a burden. You’re everything.” I knelt next to him, taking the photograph into my hands. “Remember this day? We were unstoppable.”
His gaze softened momentarily, but doubts lingered. “What if I can’t live up to that promise? What if I hold you back?”
In that moment, clarity washed over me. It was time to confront my family’s disapproval, to stand firm against the tide that threatened to pull us apart. “You are not what they say you are. I love you for you, not any expectations.”
Just as I leaned in to kiss him, a loud crash echoed from the main hall, shattering our moment.

I jumped to my feet, adrenaline surging. “Stay here, please,” I urged Noah, before darting out of the room. The confrontation I stumbled upon was worse than I imagined.
My mother stood with her arms crossed, her voice rising in frustration. “This is a mistake, and you both know it!”
Noah’s parents shot back, equally heated. “We’re trying to save our son from a lifetime of regret. This isn’t love, it’s pity!”
I could see the pain etching itself onto Noah’s face like a carving. He was right; this was a burden. Their words pierced him, urging him to retreat within himself.
“Mom! Stop!” I shouted, but my voice felt small in the storm of their accusations. “This isn’t what we want!”
As the argument escalated around me, my mind raced through the possibilities of our future. Would I ever win them over? Was this truly the start of a new life, or just the beginning of endless conflict?
Then, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket, pulling me from the chaos. I glanced at the screen—my sister’s name. I answered quickly. “What is it?”
“I have something important to tell you about our family history,” she said, her voice trembling with urgency.
