Heart racing, I dashed back to the café where I had met Lisa. I could still picture the envelope tucked away in my bag, and the thought of it missing made my stomach churn. I pushed through the door, and the familiar scent of coffee hit me, mingled with fresh pastries.
I scanned the room, desperation clawing at my throat. Then, in the corner, my breath caught. A young woman sat at a table, her fingers delicately tracing the edges of the envelope I had lost. I approached her slowly, fear and urgency pulling me closer.
“Excuse me, is that my envelope?”
She looked up, startled. “Oh, I’m sorry. I found it here.” Her eyes softened as she recognized the name scrawled across the front. “I’m Mia.”
The name sent a chill down my spine. “You’re the woman Zane wanted me to deliver this to.”
Mia nodded, biting her lip. “He contacted me before... before he passed. I didn’t think he’d actually send someone.”
“What do you mean? How do you know him?” I pressed, adrenaline pulsing in my veins.
“He was like a father to me. It’s a long story, but we had a connection. A deep one.”
My mind raced. Zane had a life I knew nothing about, and now, I was standing in front of someone who held a part of that life. “You have to tell me everything,” I insisted.

Back at home, the air felt thick with unspoken truths. Mia sat across from me at my kitchen table, the envelope between us. “Zane…” I started, but my voice faltered. How could he have hidden this from me?
“He always wanted to protect me,” she began, her voice trembling slightly. “I was a troubled kid. Zane took me under his wing when no one else would.”
Each word pierced through the fabric of my understanding of our marriage. Zane had been a father figure to her? It felt surreal, as fragments of my life with him shifted beneath me. “Why didn’t he ever mention you?”
Mia’s eyes dimmed. “He didn’t want you to know. He thought it would complicate things. But I needed him. He was my rock.”
Complicated was an understatement. My heart raced as I struggled to absorb the reality—Zane had crafted an entire world that I was excluded from. “What else don’t I know?”
Suddenly, Mia’s phone buzzed, slicing through the tension. She glanced at the screen, her face paling. “I… I need to take this.”
As she answered, I could see a storm brewing behind her eyes. “Hello?” she said, her voice steady but quaking beneath the surface.
Then, it happened. A whisper escaped her lips, barely audible, yet it felt like thunder. “They found out about us.”
