Investigating Nathan's Past
As I drove Sophie to Sarah's apartment, my heart pounded in my chest. Would I find the clarity I desperately needed or dig deeper into a pit of betrayal?
Sophie chattered in the backseat, blissfully unaware of the storm swirling in my mind. “Are we going to see my other mom?” she asked innocently.
“Yeah, sweetie. Just for a little bit,” I replied, my voice shaking despite my best efforts to stay calm.
The moment we arrived, my anxiety spiked. The door opened before we even knocked, and there stood Sarah, looking every bit the part of a mother. She smiled, and I forced a smile back, feeling like an intruder.
“Emily! It’s so good to see you.” Her voice was warm, but I heard something else in it: an unspoken connection to Nathan.
“I hope you don’t mind me coming by,” I said, trying to sound casual.
“Not at all,” she replied, ushering us inside. “Sophie is always welcome here.”
As we sat down, the conversation flowed smoothly. But with each passing moment, I felt the weight of what I had learned about Nathan's past pressing against my chest.
Then it happened. In the middle of our conversation, Sarah casually mentioned an old joint bank account she had with Nathan. My heart sank.
“He was always so generous, even after we separated,” she said, fixing her eyes on Sophie. “He just wants the best for her.”
Generous? The word hung heavy in the air, cloaked in deception. I had trusted him with everything, and here was a part of his life I had never known.
As I left Sarah's, the tightening in my stomach felt like a noose. Nathan hadn’t just lied; he had carefully crafted shadows around the truth, keeping me blissfully unaware. I had to confront him.
The Final Confrontation
Once home, Sophie scampered off to play with her toys while I paced the living room, mentally preparing for the storm. The door clicked open, and Nathan walked in, his usual easygoing demeanor instantly replaced by a frown.
“Emily? What’s wrong?”
“We need to talk, Nathan,” I said, my voice steady. I held the weight of my discoveries like a loaded gun.
“Can’t this wait?” He brushed past me, heading towards the kitchen, but I wasn’t letting him escape.
“You’ve been lying to me,” I said, my voice cracking. “I met Sarah. I know about the bank account. About how you’ve been there for her all along.”
His face paled, and for a moment, he looked like a cornered animal. “Emily, it’s not what you think.”
“Then what is it, Nathan?” I demanded. “What was she to you? Just an ex? You’ve been carrying this weight with you for years!”
He sighed deeply, his defenses crumbling. “I never really got over Sarah. I thought…” he hesitated, struggling for the words. “I hoped we could work things out.”
“You hoped? After everything?” I felt the world tilt beneath me, the honesty slicing deeper than any lie could.
My mind raced. All the years of trust shattered in an instant. My heart thudded painfully as the truth set in. He had never been fully committed to us. Nathan still wanted her.
“I don’t know if I can do this anymore,” I whispered, feeling the weight of my own decision press heavily upon me. “I need to think.”
