The next day, I headed back to the lawyer's office. I felt more determined this time, ready to face Peter if necessary. As I approached the building, memories of Lawrence flooded back. All those shared moments, and yet how little I truly knew of him.

As I entered, Peter was already there, his brow furrowed as he spoke with the lawyer. I hesitated for a moment, then squared my shoulders and stepped inside. His eyes met mine, and an unmistakable tension filled the room.

"What are you doing here?" he snapped, his voice low.

"I have questions about my trust," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. "About my inheritance."

Peter scoffed, and the lawyer's eyes darted between us. "You have no rights to anything," he said, crossing his arms.

My hands clenched into fists. "Lawrence named me in his will. I think that gives me some rights."

Peter turned to the lawyer. "This is ridiculous. I want her out of here."

The lawyer raised a hand. "There are more complex matters at play, Peter. Let’s discuss what Lawrence intended."

Confusion settled in my stomach. Lawrence had intended something? My mind raced as the lawyer flipped through the papers.

"This is a misunderstanding," he declared. "Lawrence made arrangements for both of you."

Peter's face darkened. I felt a chill run down my spine. What could Lawrence possibly have done to protect both of us?

"With the cabin, it’s complicated," the lawyer explained, pulling out a document. "It wasn't just about the structure. There’s a deeper connection."

That word—connection—made my heart race. I had thought of Lawrence as a friend, an ally in my solitude.

But now, a nagging doubt began to creep in. What else had he hidden away?

Before I could voice my thoughts, Peter stepped forward, a gleam in his eye. "You’ll regret this, you know."
