Unraveling the Past
As the gavel struck, the courtroom resettled. Olivia's attorney, Robert, stood, adjusting his tie as he prepared to unleash a truth Jonathan hoped was buried forever.
“Your Honor,” Robert began, his voice steady, “I would like to bring to light an incident that occurred several years ago involving my client’s ex-husband.” He gestured towards Jonathan, who sat stiffly, his jaw tightening.
“This is a distraction,” Jonathan’s attorney interrupted sharply. “Irrelevant to the custody of the children.”
“It’s relevant to his character,” Robert shot back, a fire igniting in his eyes. “In 2015, a scandal arose concerning a building owned by Mr. Reed. There were allegations of severe neglect regarding tenant safety.”
The gasps rippled through the audience like electric shockwaves. Olivia felt a swell of hope. Could this be the turning point?
Jonathan’s face paled, and his fingers drummed nervously on the table. His mother shifted in her seat, eyes narrowing. “This is absurd,” she muttered, her voice low but venomous.
As Robert continued, Olivia listened, her heart racing. “Records showed numerous safety violations ignored by Mr. Reed, resulting in injuries to multiple tenants.”
“Pure fabrications!” Jonathan bellowed, waving his arms dismissively. “This is nothing but a smear campaign!”
The jury murmured, glancing at Jonathan, then at Robert. The tension in the room thickened like fog. The shift was palpable.
Just as Olivia dared to feel a glimmer of hope, the courtroom doors swung open. A young man stood there, disheveled and anxious. Derek, former employee of Jonathan, had arrived.
Shocking Testimony
All eyes turned to Derek as he hesitated, visibly trembling under the weight of the moment. “I-I have something to say,” he stammered, stepping forward. The judge gestured for him to sit, the air buzzing with anticipation.
“I witnessed Mr. Reed covering up safety violations,” Derek exclaimed, his voice a mix of fear and urgency. “He told us to ignore the complaints, to prioritize profits over people.”
Olivia’s pulse quickened, her hands clenching tightly in her lap. This could be it—the evidence she needed.
“Your Honor, this is a clear attempt to discredit my client,” Jonathan’s attorney shot back, rising to object.
“He’s lying!” Jonathan roared, his composure shattering like glass. “This is a desperate witness!”
“But I have records—emails where he explicitly tells us to cover things up,” Derek continued, his voice trembling.
“Irrelevant,” Jonathan’s attorney scoffed, steamrolling over him. “This witness is unreliable. He was fired for incompetence.”
Just when Olivia felt the tide turning, Derek’s demeanor shifted. “I-I can’t do this!” he suddenly blurted, his eyes wide with panic. “I take it back!”
The courtroom fell silent, the disbelief hanging in the air like a heavy weight. Olivia felt the ground shift beneath her.
As the shock unfurled, a vibration buzzed in her pocket. The text popped up: “Your cousin knows everything about Jonathan. She’s been protecting him. You’re in danger.”
Olivia’s heart raced as betrayal washed over her. How deep did this go? Her cousin—what had she hidden from her?
