The Unraveling

Michael's expression shifted from surprise to something darker, the corners of his mouth tightening. “Why would you pull that out now?”

A quick glance at my son showed a mix of curiosity and concern. “Mom, what’s going on?”

“You need to look at these, Michael.”

His eyes narrowed, and I watched the realization dawn. “You went through my things.”

“Your things?” I scoffed. “Those belong to Clara, too. Every word she wrote made clear what you are.”

I could feel the tension coiling in the air, a taut wire ready to snap.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about. Clara and I were happy!” He slammed his hand on the table, rattling the wine glasses.

Everyone stared, caught between shock and intrigue. I pushed past their stares, focusing solely on Michael.

“You borrowed against her life insurance policy without her knowledge.” My voice was louder now, fueled by adrenaline. “What kind of happiness is built on lies?”

“You don’t understand!” he shouted, the mask falling away. “I did what I had to do!”

“What you had to do?” I took a step closer, emboldened. “Or what you wanted to do?”

“Stop this!”

But I couldn’t; the dam of suspicion had broken. “Clara knew you would drag me into your debts. What else did you expect?”

His face twisted with anger, and for a brief moment, I saw another side of him—the man who had been drowning all along.

“You think you’re better than me? You think you can just waltz in and play the good sister? You married me.”

His words stung, but I held my ground. The truth bubbled to the surface like something festering inside.

“I did marry you,” I replied, voice steady. “But that doesn’t mean I’m going down with your ship.”

Then, the doorbell rang, slicing through the tension.

"Who would be coming here?" Michael hissed, eyes flicking toward the door.

Not knowing what to expect, I turned and headed for the door. My heart raced as I opened it, revealing the elderly lawyer with a grim expression.
