I Married My Childhood Sweetheart in His Hospital Room, Then Discovered a Secret That Changed Everything Save

After the Wedding

I married my childhood sweetheart in his hospital room, after doctors said he had only months to live. For a moment, everything felt surreal. The sterile scent of antiseptic filled my nostrils as I sat beside Ben's bed, his pale face framed by the monotony of the beeping machines.

Ben lay there, sleeping peacefully, a fragile calmness that deepened the weight in my chest. I couldn’t shake the nurse's whispered words from my mind. "Look under his mattress." What was he hiding? Why was there a secret layered beneath his calm exterior?

With each breath, my heart raced as dread knotted in my stomach. I glanced towards the door, half-expecting her to return and offer more cryptic advice. But it was only me, alone with my questions and the slumbering form of the man I loved with all my heart.

My fingers twitched. I wanted to reach out, to shake him awake and demand answers, yet I knew I had to wait until he was truly out of sight. The room was a sanctuary of fragile hope, and I wondered if digging deeper would shatter it.

The Hidden Truth

Once Ben shuffled into the bathroom, I glanced at the door before moving closer to his bed. The mattress barely budged under my hands as I gripped the edge, my pulse a wild drum in my ears. I took a deep breath and lifted it, revealing a worn folder underneath.

My heart dropped when I spotted the envelope addressed to “my love.” Slowly, I opened the folder, my hands trembling. Inside, medical documents spilled out, each page heavy with words I both yearned and dreaded to read. My fingers shook as I skimmed through the details of experimental treatments, signs of hope hidden in the shadow of despair.

“No,” I whispered, disbelief coursing through me. He was searching for options without telling me. Why wouldn’t he share this? The glow of the dim hospital lights flickered, illuminating the heavy reality of his choices.

Suddenly, the sound of the bathroom door creaked open. Panic surged, my mind racing. I could hear the shuffle of his footsteps. I couldn’t get caught; I had to put everything back! My heart raced as I hastily shoved the documents back under the mattress, every second feeling like an eternity.

Just then, I heard him returning, and I hastily shoved everything back in place, heart racing.
