I Married a Waitress to Escape My Parents, But Her Secret Turned My World Upside Down

All That Remains
I stood my ground, glaring at the man until he finally turned and stomped away. Guilt piled up in my chest as I returned to Claire, who knelt beside Lily, wiping the girl’s tears with gentle fingers. “Are you okay?” I asked, my voice softer now.
Claire took a shaky breath. “He’s just...” She paused, collecting her thoughts. “Lily’s father left us. I never wanted her to know the truth or face that kind of man.”
“You don’t have to do this alone, Claire. I’ll support you both,” I offered, feeling a rush of sincerity as I looked into her eyes.
Her expression softened, gratitude washing over her features. “You really mean that?”
“Of course. No one should have to struggle like this.”
A small smile broke through her worry, and for a moment, I felt like I was seeing the real Claire. But as we walked toward the car, I noticed she pulled out her phone, her brows knitting together. I strained to catch her whispered words, “I’m still keeping it hidden. He can’t find out...”
Unwelcome Guests
Back at home, the atmosphere shifted. The door swung open with a jarring creak, and my parents swept in, all smiles and expectations. “How’s married life treating you?” my mother gushed, her eyes sparkling.
Claire put on a bright facade, laughing lightly as she poured drinks. But beneath her smiles, I sensed the tension coiling tighter.
During dinner, my mother casually mentioned, “We’ve already contacted a lawyer about a pre-nup for you.” The words hung heavy in the air, and I glanced at Claire. Her face paled, all color draining from her cheeks.
“What?” I spat, disbelief cutting through my politeness. “You didn’t mention this to me.”
“It’s just a precaution. We want to protect you, dear,” my mother replied, oblivious to the crack forming in Claire’s composure.
“What about Claire?” I shot back, my voice rising. “She deserves to feel secure in this marriage.”
“This is a business arrangement, son. Nothing more,” my father interrupted, his tone as cold as ever.
Claire’s fork clattered to her plate, and her eyes darted between my parents and me. The unease escalated until it burst. “I can’t do this,” she said, standing abruptly.
“Claire, wait—” I started, but she turned away, visibly shaken. The table fell silent.
Just as I confront her with the gravity of her situation, the doorbell rang, echoing through the tension in the room. I exchanged a glance with my parents, confusion mounting.
When I opened the door, my heart sank. There stood the man from the park, a sinister smile on his face, clutching a shared custody agreement with Claire’s name boldly typed across the top.
