I Married a Homeless Man to Defy My Parents — What Happened Next Shocked Me

I Married a Homeless Man to Defy My Parents — What Happened Next Shocked Me

I'm 34, and my parents won't stop nagging me about being a spinster forever and never getting married. They tried setting me up with everyone, desperate for grandchildren. Then they crossed the line: they told me I wouldn't get a cent of their inheritance unless I got married by 35. I had only a few months left.

One day, fed up, I saw a homeless man begging. He was dirty, but his eyes were kind. On a whim, I offered to marry him. I made it clear: it'd be a marriage of convenience. I'd give him shelter, clothes, and money, and in return, he'd pretend to be my husband. His name was Stan, and he agreed. I bought him new clothes. Three days later, I introduced him to my parents as my fiancé, and they were thrilled.

We got married. Then, just a month after that, I came home and got THE SHOCK OF MY LIFE. I stood there with eyes wide open, struggling to process what was happening.

The First Signs of Change

As I stepped into the house, the first thing I noticed was the smell. It wasn't the usual scent of my mother's overused air fresheners; it was something different, something cleaner. The living room was spotless, the furniture rearranged, and the windows were wide open, letting in a fresh breeze. Stan was nowhere to be seen.

I called out, "Stan? Are you here?"

A voice came from the kitchen, "Just a minute!"

I walked to the kitchen and froze. Stan was standing there, wearing an apron, and the kitchen was impeccable. The counters were gleaming, and a pot of something savory was simmering on the stove. He turned and smiled, "Hey, welcome home!"

I couldn't help but be taken aback. "What's going on here?"

Stan chuckled, "I thought I'd start making the place feel more like a home."

My heart skipped a beat. This wasn't the lazy, disinterested man I had expected. This was someone who was putting effort into our new life together.

The Unfolding Mystery

Over the next few days, more changes began to surface. Stan wasn't just cleaning the house; he was also fixing things that had been broken for years. The leaky faucet in the bathroom was fixed, the creaky floorboards in the hallway were silenced, and even the old bookshelves in the study were reinforced.

I watched him work, a mix of curiosity and admiration. "How do you know how to do all this?" I asked one evening as he was sanding down the kitchen table.

Stan looked up, his hands covered in sawdust. "I used to be a handyman before... well, before everything fell apart."

I frowned, "Why didn't you tell me?"

He sighed, "I didn't want you to feel obligated or think I was trying to take advantage. I just wanted to help out."

As the days passed, I found myself learning more about Stan. He had a degree in engineering but lost his job due to a company shutdown. His wife had left him, and he had no family to turn to. The more I learned, the more I realized how wrong I had been about him.
