I Lost My Job for Saving a Stranger’s Life and Now She’s Searching for Me

I Lost My Job for Saving a Stranger’s Life and Now She’s Searching for Me Save

Sebastian Leaves the Office

I left the office in a daze, my mind reeling from the injustice. The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the parking lot, but I barely noticed. My vision was blurred by a mix of anger and disbelief.

I got into my car, my hands shaking as I tried to start the engine. The familiar hum of the car did little to calm me. The weight of what had just happened felt crushing. How could Nick, someone I had worked so hard for, fire me for doing the right thing?

As I drove home, the city lights blurred into streaks of light. My thoughts were a chaotic mess. I kept replaying the scene in my head: Nick’s cold expression, the empty conference room, the pitch deck glowing mockingly on the wall monitor.

I arrived home to find Sarah waiting for me in the living room. She looked up as I walked in, her face a mix of concern and curiosity.

“Honey, what happened? You look terrible.”

I dropped my laptop bag on the floor and sank into the couch, feeling the weight of the day bearing down on me. “I lost my job,” I said, my voice breaking.

Sarah’s eyes widened. “What? Why?”

“A woman collapsed on the side of the road on my way to the office. She was having a heart attack. I couldn’t just leave her there. By the time I got to the office, we’d lost the account.”

Sarah’s face softened, and she reached out to touch my arm. “Oh, Sebastian. That’s awful. You did the right thing.”

But the comfort was short-lived. The reality of what it meant hit me hard. “I’ve been at that place for three years, Sarah. Three years of late nights, weekends, and missed dinners. And now it’s all gone.”

Sarah's Concern Grows

Sarah’s initial sympathy quickly gave way to concern. She leaned back, her expression turning serious. “We need to talk about this, Sebastian. We have bills to pay, a mortgage. What are we going to do now?”

I felt a surge of frustration. “I couldn’t just leave her, Sarah. She could have died.”

“I understand that, but think about our situation. We’ve been saving for months just to make ends meet. What about the baby? We can’t afford to have you out of work right now.”

The tension in the room was palpable. I could feel the walls closing in, the air thick with unspoken fears and doubts.

“What are you saying? That I should have prioritized the job over a stranger’s life?” My voice rose, the anger bubbling up.

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears. “I’m not saying that. But we have responsibilities, Sebastian. We can’t just throw everything away for a good deed.”

“That’s exactly what you’re saying,” I countered, my voice shaking. “You’re saying my job is more important than someone’s life.”

The argument escalated, each word slicing deeper. “Maybe if you hadn’t been so reckless, we wouldn’t be in this mess,” she shouted.

I stood up, feeling more alone than ever. “I did the right thing, Sarah. And if that means we have to face the consequences, then so be it.”

Her face hardened. “Well, you better start figuring out how we’re going to pay for it.”

The silence that followed was deafening. For a moment, I thought I might break. But instead, I turned and walked out of the room, leaving behind the only person who had ever truly understood me.

The Next Morning

The next morning, Sebastian's phone buzzed with a call from an unfamiliar number. He hesitated for a moment before answering, his mind still foggy from the lack of sleep and the events of the previous day.

"Hello?" he answered, his voice groggy.

"Sebastian? This is Dr. Emily Carter. I don't know if you remember me, but you helped me on the side of the road yesterday."

Sebastian's eyes widened. "Dr. Carter? Yes, I remember. Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, thanks to you. I had a heart attack. I was on my way to a critical surgery when it happened. Without your help, I wouldn't have made it in time."

Sebastian felt a wave of relief and a sense of purpose he hadn't felt in a long time. "I'm glad I could help. I just did what anyone would have done."
