I Locked My Son’s Boyfriend in the Basement and Called the Police

I Locked My Son’s Boyfriend in the Basement and Called the Police Save

Locked Away

I stood in the kitchen, the pot roast simmering, the clink of dishes echoing off the freshly polished cabinets.

Tyler’s voice floated down the hallway, “Mom, they’re here!” It was the same excitement I’d heard a hundred times on the phone, but this time it felt like a ticking clock.

When Aaron stepped over the threshold, his smile was easy, his eyes bright—too bright, I thought, as a cold knot tightened in my chest.

My hand brushed the sideboard and lingered on a small wooden box I’d kept hidden for years.

Inside lay a faded photograph: my late husband, Frank, arm around a young man whose jawline matched Aaron’s perfectly, his hair the same unruly curl.

I slipped the photo into the pocket of my apron, feeling the weight of a secret I’d buried with the attic’s dust.

Downstairs, the basement door waited, its iron latch rusted but still functional.

I turned the key, the metal screeching as the lock fell into place, and pushed the door open just enough to slip the picture onto the shelf that held the old wine rack.

The dim light flickered, casting long shadows that seemed to swallow the image whole.

My heart hammered as I closed the door, the click echoing like a promise.

“There’s something I want to show you downstairs,” I said, forcing a smile as Aaron followed, curiosity flashing across his face.

Shouts from Below

Tyler disappeared up the stairs, the clatter of glasses in his hands a brief, comforting noise.

“I’ll be right back,” he called, his tone light, unaware of the breathless silence that had settled in the basement.

I stood behind the heavy door, the lock cold beneath my fingertips.

“Aaron,” I said, voice low, “who are you really? How do you know my husband?”

His eyes narrowed, confusion turning to dread as he realized the walls were closing in.

“You don’t understand,” he whispered, his voice trembling, “I’m not who you think I am.”

I pressed the latch harder, the metal grinding, refusing to let him speak any farther.

From the hallway, a muffled thud rose—Tyler’s footfall, the faint scrape of a chair as he set the drinks down.

He glanced at the basement door, a puzzled frown creasing his forehead.

“Mom?” he asked, voice muffled through the wood, “What’s going on?”

I swallowed, the truth burning behind my teeth.

“It’s nothing, Tyler. Just a…renovation,” I lied, hoping the sound of my own breath would drown his curiosity.

But the basement was alive with sound now—Aaron’s voice, hoarse and urgent, cutting through the metal.
