Unraveling Threads

The weeks rolled on. Ronin and I found our routine—cooking together, leaving the living room lights on late into the night.

One afternoon, I returned from a long shift at the salon, fatigue wrapping around my bones like a heavy blanket.

The studio smelled of something rich and spicy, the kind of meal that made your mouth water before you even sat down. Ronin stood at the stove, a spatula in hand. He stirred a bubbling pot, humming an off-key tune.

“You made dinner?” I asked, smiling.

“Thought I’d surprise you,” he said, turning. His face lit up, but I noticed the flicker of something behind his eyes. A shadow that trailed him like an unwanted ghost.

It gnawed at me. I wanted to believe everything was fine. We were free, building our lives, but there were too many pieces I couldn’t see. His phone buzzed against the countertop, and my stomach twisted.

I tried to ignore it. “What’s for dinner?”

“Curry,” he said, grinning. “Smelled it on your apron the other day, you know? Thought you’d like it.”

I focused on his eyes, the warmth in that moment, but the suspicion curled in my chest. That evening, as we settled in with our plates, I could no longer pretend that something was not off.

“Ronin,” I started, but the phone buzzed again, louder now. His smile faltered.

“It’s just my dad,” he said quickly.

“How often do you talk to him?” I asked, unsure what I wanted to hear.

“Not much. Just the normal stuff.”

“Normal stuff?”

He glanced away, and I felt the tension growing. “Lea, I promise, it’s nothing. Just the house, bills, all that.”

“Then let me see it.”
