I Knew the Truth About My House Before I Knew the Truth About My Heart
Aftermath
Megan sat in Ethan’s car with her arms folded tightly, staring forward. Ethan stood beside the driveway, unwilling to leave, as if waiting for me to soften.
When the final truck pulled away, the officer handed me an incident number and advised me to contact my attorney. Then she left.
The street returned to its ordinary evening rhythm. Sprinklers ticked. A dog barked. Somewhere nearby, someone was grilling onions.
The air smelled faintly of cardboard, dust, and the lemon cleaner I had used the week before. A scratch marked the hallway floor where someone had dragged a dresser. In the living room, one of Megan’s boxes had been missed. It sat near the window, sealed with pink tape.
Then I sat on the floor and cried for the first time.
Not elegantly. Not quietly. I cried until my ribs ached.
The Hidden Letter
Hours later, as I gathered my thoughts, I reached for the lone box and ripped open the tape. Inside lay a pile of clothing, a few books, and a small framed photo.
It was a picture of us—Megan, Ethan, and I—smiling in front of my new house on the day we closed. We looked so happy, almost blissful.
But beneath it lay something else: a letter addressed to me, not from either of them. My heart raced as I unfolded the paper, its edges worn and yellowing.
"Laura," it began. "If you’re reading this, it means the house is no longer yours. I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you in person." My breath caught.
It went on, revealing an arrangement I had never expected. A betrayal deeper than I could fathom.
The writer claimed they had made a secret deal with Ethan, a deal that concerned not just the property but everything we had built together.
“They think you don’t know,” it warned, “but they’ve been plotting this for a long time.”
My hands shook as the implications settled. The photo, the letter, the very house—I was losing more than I realized.
“I’ll make sure you get back what's yours,”
it concluded ominously. “But you need to prepare yourself. Trust no one.”
I stared at the letter, my heart pounding. Just as I reached for my phone to call Mr. Harrow, I heard a soft knock at the door.
I froze. The world blurred with the sudden weight of uncertainty. Who was it this time? And what more were they going to take from me?
