The next few days passed in a blur. Ethan continued to thrive under Claire’s guidance. I watched as she became a fixture in our lives, laughing at the little things, making the mundane feel special.

But Vanessa’s parting words echoed in my mind. “You don’t know, do you?” I felt a growing sense of unease.

That Saturday, Claire and I sat on the porch, our conversation shifting between light-hearted banter and deeper topics. Something had changed within me since she had entered our lives.

“You seem lost in thought,” Claire remarked, her eyebrows knitted together as she sipped her coffee.

“It’s just… Vanessa’s words have been haunting me,” I admitted. “I can’t shake the feeling that there’s something more lurking beneath the surface.”

Claire frowned. “What do you think she meant?”

“I don’t know, but I can’t shake the feeling that she’s planning something... against us,” I replied, the words tasting bitter coming out.

“I know we don’t have a connection to her anymore, but maybe she’s just lost,” Claire said softly. “Or desperate to regain something she thinks she lost.”

“But at what cost?” I asked. “We’ve built a fragile peace.”

Claire looked at me with resolve. “Then let’s be aware. If she’s plotting, we need to be ready.”

But as the day wore on, I could feel a shift in the atmosphere. It was like a string pulled too tight, ready to snap.

That evening, Ethan excitedly recounted stories from a school field trip, the trio of us nestled on the couch, laughter filling the room. But just as I felt a sense of normalcy return, my phone buzzed on the table.

Picking it up, I saw a text from an unknown number. “You don’t know what I know, but I can show you everything.”

I felt my heart drop. I looked at Claire, who was now watching me closely.

“Daniel? What’s wrong?”

I swallowed hard, my fingers trembling as I typed back, “Who is this?”

Confrontations

Before I could catch my breath, my phone buzzed again. “You have something I want. And I know how to take it.”

“What do you want?” I quickly typed, feeling the sense of dread
