Starting at the Shop
Rachel Morgan had barely settled into her new role when she felt the weight of disarray. The garage buzzed with activity, yet it felt more like a tornado had swept through than a functioning auto repair shop.
“So, what’s first?” she asked Daniel, who was still trying to catch his breath from their earlier encounter. He wiped his hands on the grease-stained rag, looking lost.
“Uh, we can start anywhere,” he stammered, glancing from the mountain of receipts to the customers waiting impatiently. “Just... maybe not that pile.”
With a deep breath, Rachel surveyed the chaos. “Right, everything needs a system.” She grabbed a stack of papers and began sorting.
“Wow, you’re good at this,” Daniel said, leaning against the workbench, a hint of admiration in his eyes.
“Six years in hospital administration. You learn to categorize under pressure.”
“Hospital admin? You must deal with some real tough characters.”
She chuckled softly. “Let’s just say I have extensive experience in managing chaos.”
From the back of the garage, Mike called out, “Hey Danny, are we going to fix that engine or just stare at it?”
“I need a minute!” Daniel shouted back, turning to Rachel with an apologetic smile. “He doesn’t mean it. He just… wants to know if I’ve got a plan.”
“Maybe it’s time you made one,” Rachel suggested, organizing a few scattered invoices.
“A plan sounds great, but organization isn’t really my strong suit,” Daniel admitted, scratching the back of his neck. “That’s where Mike shines.”
“You know, you could make it work. We could make it work,” Rachel proposed, her voice laced with hope. “Just give me a chance.”
He met her gaze, and for a moment, the clutter of the shop faded into the background. “Alright, let’s give this a shot.”
Uncovering the Truth
Days passed quickly, and Rachel became entrenched in the numbers. She poured over the financial records, squinting at line after line of data. Something felt horribly off.
“Daniel!” She called, her heart racing. “We need to talk about these profit margins.”
He dropped a wrench, wiping grease from his hands. “Is it bad?”
“You’re on the brink of collapse if things keep going like this!” Rachel almost shouted, frustration boiling inside her. “You’re losing money, and you don’t even know why.”
“I’m doing my best!” he shot back defensively, crossing his arms. “This is my livelihood.”
“It’s not just yours! You’ve got a mechanic relying on you, too.”
Daniel’s face clouded, and she could see the weight of his responsibility pressing down on him. Panic danced in his eyes. “What do you want me to do? Close up shop?”
“No! I want to help. But you have to trust me.”
They locked eyes, the tension thickening in the air. “Let’s work together, Daniel. I can fix this.”
Just as they reached a tentative agreement, Mike burst in, his face flushed with anger. “What the hell is going on?”
“This isn’t your business, Mike!” Daniel shouted, but his voice faltered.
Mike shot a glare at Rachel. “You’re just throwing good money after bad,” he sneered, storming out, the door slamming behind him.
The silence that followed was suffocating, leaving Daniel and Rachel in an unbearable stillness.
