I Hired a Stranger to Be My Boyfriend and Found Strength I Never Knew I Had at My Ex’s Party

I Hired a Stranger to Be My Boyfriend and Found Strength I Never Knew I Had at My Ex’s Party Save

Finding Strength in Vulnerability

We stepped away from the crowd, the noise fading as we sank into a hidden corner of the yard, away from prying eyes. The warmth of the sun was replaced by a cool breeze, a much-needed reprieve from the chaos.

"I can't believe I let him get to me like that," I admitted, my voice shaky. "I thought I was over this. But every time I see him…”

“It’s like he cuts right through me,” I finished, my heart aching.

Jake looked at me with those deep, understanding eyes. “You’re not alone,” he said softly. “I know what it feels like to be discarded.”

He confided in me about his ex, how she walked away without a second glance, how it shattered his world. “It felt like I was invisible,” he said, his vulnerability disarming. “But I learned to pick myself back up.”

I felt the weight of my pain lifting slightly, as if his words were a balm on my wounds. “How did you do it?” I asked, desperate to understand.

“I realized that my worth isn’t tied to someone else’s opinion of me. You’re so much more than how he sees you,” Jake replied, his voice steady.

For the first time in what felt like ages, I smiled, truly smiled. The laughter from the party faded almost completely. In this moment, it was just Jake and me, forging a connection that felt genuine.

The Fireworks and the Unexpected Kiss

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the first firework exploded above us, painting the night sky with brilliant colors. I felt something shift within me, an unfamiliar thrill as I watched Jake charm the crowd.

He cracked jokes, made light of the situation, and I found myself laughing freely, the sound echoing in the warm evening. Desmond’s scowl across the yard was like a shadow creeping back into my mind, but it retreated as I focused on Jake.

Just then, Desmond stormed over, his face twisted with irritation. “What do you see in him?” he spat, loud enough for half the party to hear. “He’s nothing more than a hired hand!”

I opened my mouth to respond, but Jake was already stepping forward, his presence a shield. “She deserves someone who sees her for who she is,” he said, surprising me with his fierce protectiveness.

My heart raced. I couldn’t believe he was standing up for me, defending my worth. This was the moment I’d dreamt of.

As the fireworks flickered around us, my laughter bubbled up again, ready to spill over. Just as I prepared to stand up to Desmond, he leaned in close.

“You really don’t know what kind of man you’re with, do you?” he whispered, his breath hot against my ear. It made my stomach drop.
