I Found My Father at a Funeral, But He Was Living a Life I Knew Nothing About

I Found My Father at a Funeral, But He Was Living a Life I Knew Nothing About Save

Confronting the Silence

Alicia's heart raced as she turned to Lila, the weight of the letters pressing heavily in her thoughts. “I found something in his things,” she said, her voice trembling. “Letters. From him to me.”

Lila's eyes widened, the light inside them dimming. “You shouldn’t have seen those,” she replied, her tone barely above a whisper.

Alicia took a deep breath, feeling a mix of anger and confusion swirl inside her. “Why not? He wanted to reach out. Why didn’t he?”

Lila shifted uncomfortably, her fingers tracing the edge of the table. “Because...he didn’t feel worthy. Not after everything.”

“Not worthy? He left me! He chose to disappear!” Alicia snapped, frustration boiling over.

Lila flinched at the accusation. “You don’t understand. He thought he was protecting you. After he remembered, the guilt consumed him. He felt he didn’t deserve—”

“Deserve what? A second chance? A family?” Alicia interrupted, her voice cracking. “Was I just a burden to him?”

“No! It was never about you. It was about him!” Lila insisted, her voice rising. “He kept those letters close, even after forgetting. He never stopped loving you.”

Alicia's anger began to spiral into uncertainty. “And you never told him? You just let him suffer?”

Lila’s expression darkened. “I found the letters too, Alicia. I found out about you long ago. I couldn’t share it with him. I didn’t want to hurt him more.”

The air between them thickened, each word a dagger. “So all this time, you’ve been keeping me a secret. Your whole family has been built on lies.”

A Sister's Burden

Alicia took a step back, grappling with a truth that felt too heavy to bear. “You knew about me? And you just... let this go on?”

Lila’s face twisted with regret. “For years, I’ve wanted to tell you, but it felt wrong. He was my dad too. I thought I was protecting us both.”

“Protecting us?” Alicia echoed, incredulous. “You don’t think I deserve to know who I am?”

"I wrote to you, Alicia. I tried to reach out, but I was scared. My father never wanted to hurt you, and I didn’t want to shatter what little we had left,” Lila confessed, her eyes glistening.

Alicia felt her heart pound, the realization hitting like a tidal wave. “You’ve been carrying this all alone. You were waiting for me to find out and—”

Suddenly, the sound of a firm knock on the door shattered their silence. They both turned, tense and unsure.

“What now?” Alicia whispered, dread pooling in her stomach.

As Lila glanced toward the door, her expression shifted to panic. “I didn’t expect anyone else... not now.”

Another knock, this time louder, echoed through the small room. “Police! Open up!”

Alicia's breath hitched. “Why would the police be here?”

Lila’s eyes were wide with terror as she muttered, “It can’t be...”

“Lila... what did you do?” Alicia asked, her heart racing with the looming uncertainty of what they'd find when the door swung open.
