Confrontation in the Office
The sudden click of a door handle broke the tense silence. My brother-in-law stepped into the office, his eyes widening as he took in the scene. “What are you doing here?” he asked, feigning nonchalance.
My heart raced as I clutched the ledger in my hands. “We need to talk about this,” I said, pointing at the documents scattered across the desk.
His brow furrowed, and for a brief moment, I could see panic flicker in his eyes. “These are just... old papers,” he stammered, taking a step closer.
“Old papers?” George echoed incredulously. “These show your business transactions. Why didn’t you ever mention this?”
He shifted uncomfortably, his fingers fiddling with the edge of the desk. “It’s complicated. I didn’t want to worry you both.”
“Worry us?” I shot back, my voice rising. “You’ve borrowed money from us for years while running a successful business? What kind of game are you playing?”
The air thickened with tension, and I could see my brother-in-law's facade beginning to crack. “You don’t understand—” he started, but I cut him off.
The Unraveling
“Then explain it to us!” I pressed, my mind racing with possibilities. “This looks like you’ve been lying to us all this time.”
His shoulders slumped, and for a moment, he just stared at the floor. “Okay, okay. Yes, I’ve been using your kindness. But you have to realize, I was in a tough spot... still am.”
“You said you had paid us back! The ledger shows payments that weren’t to us!” George shouted, his voice echoing in the tense void between us.
“I meant to settle it, I swear,” my brother-in-law said, his voice faltering. “But I needed to keep up appearances. It was never just about the money.”
“Keep up appearances?” I echoed, struggling to comprehend what he was saying. “You’ve been living a lie at our expense!”
Just then, his phone buzzed loudly on the desk, shattering the fragile moment. He glanced at it, irritation flashing across his face. “I can’t talk about this now,” he said, as he stepped away to answer the call.
The moment he turned his back, I felt a surge of anger mixed with disbelief. “We might have to go to the authorities about this,” I blurted out, unable to contain myself.
His reaction was instant. He spun around, eyes wild with fury. “You wouldn’t dare!” he shouted, fists clenched at his sides.
Before I could respond, he stormed out of the room, leaving us in stunned silence.
