Aftermath

“What did you tell Marian about me?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

The answer came too quickly, too painfully.

I nodded slowly. “So I was not erased. Just made convenient.”

He stepped around the island. I lifted a hand, and he stopped.

Sophia cannot wake up to this conversation.

I saw the father in him then, the man who built pillow forts and crafted bedtime stories. But now, those familiar things felt like shadows of a person I thought I knew.

“Viv, I need to talk to her. I need to fix this.”

“Fix it?” I interrupted. “You can’t fix betrayal. Not when you’ve been lying the entire time.”

“No, you don’t understand.” He took a step closer. “If she finds out—”

“If she finds out what? That you were living a life with someone else while playing house with us?”

His eyes darkened, and I could see the struggle inside him. “I didn’t choose this.”

“And yet you left every choice on my plate.”

I watched him. Those familiar eyes turned foreign, the warmth just a flicker now.

My phone buzzed again. I checked it, and my heart sank.

Victor’s message: I have confirmation. Marian is here. She’s in the lobby.

Dominic’s jaw clenched. “I didn’t think she’d show up.”

“And now she’s about to meet our daughter?” I felt my heart race.

“I thought she’d stay away,” he pleaded.

But the truth was already spilling through the cracks in our lives. I could feel the walls around me tighten, closing in.

The Weight of Secrets

“She’s not just going to meet her, she’s going to confront you,” I said, trembling. “What fit of insanity made you think this wouldn’t happen?”

“Victor assured me he’d handle this.”

“Victor? He’s not God!”

Dominic stepped back as if my words stung. “You don’t understand.”

“No, you don’t understand! I’ve been living in the dark, and now the light is coming.”

I could almost see the moments of happiness we’d built together, the birthday parties, the holiday dinners, collapsing into a pool of shattered dreams.

“Vivienne,” he said, “think for a second.”

I crossed my arms, drawing my own walls up. “What do you want me to think about? Your other family? Your lies?”

“About Sophia,” he replied sharply. “She’s going to be caught in this if we don’t handle it right.”

His words stung, but they also struck a chord.
