The Meeting

When I met Karen, my lawyer, her expression shifted from polite concern to urgency. “Do not go home and confront him,” she said. “You hear me? He has been building this for months. You are going to be smarter than he is for one more week.”

That same day, I met Marcus at a diner off the highway. “He texted me this morning,” Marcus said. “He wants a specific report for Saturday.” My heart sank as he spoke. “He said if I see you at a restaurant, I should photograph you looking confused.”

It was an evening of feigned normalcy. David poured himself a scotch, leaning against the kitchen counter. “I made us a reservation for Saturday,” he said, his voice casual. “Thought we could use a night out.” I wanted to scream, to push back against the lies swirling around me.

But I nodded, forcing a smile, trying to absorb every detail that might give me an edge. In my mind, the pieces were falling into place. I texted Karen one word: “Saturday.”

“No one needs to know you’re onto him yet, Rachel.”

Saturday evening arrived with an eerie calm. The restaurant was buzzing with life, couples laughing, friends toasting. I could feel David’s eyes on me as I slid the folder across the tablecloth, my pulse racing. “I know about Marcus,” I said quietly.

Confronting the Beast

The air thickened between us. David’s expression shifted from surprise to something cold. “What do you think you know?” he asked, a dangerous edge creeping into his voice.

His laugh was humorless, a forced mirth that didn’t reach his eyes. “You think you can just waltz in here and assume you know what’s best for you?” he spat back, his words slicing through the atmosphere.

My resolve surged. “David, I’ve seen the folder. I know what you’ve been doing.”

His jaw clenched, fury bubbling beneath the surface. “You’re making a mistake,” he cautioned, but the tension hung heavy, stifling. I hadn’t realized then how dangerously close I was to the truth.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Just as I prepared to push back, my phone vibrated on the table. A text from Marcus. “I’m waiting for your sign.” I felt my breath hitch.

“Who’s Marcus?” David’s tone hardened, the shadows flickering in his gaze. The restaurant noise faded, leaving only the frantic beating of my heart. The night swimming around me turned darker, the candles on our table flickering as if mocking my burgeoning dread.
