Confronting the Past
Clara paced the floor of their living room, her heart pounding. She had just left the bank, the weight of Beatrice's letter still fresh in her mind. She needed to confront Owen again, to lay everything bare between them.
As she entered the café, the aroma of coffee mixed with the tension swirling in the air. Owen sat at a corner table, scrolling through his phone, oblivious to her presence. Anger surged through her; he was so quick to move on while she was still reeling.
“Clara,” he said, finally looking up, his voice flat. “I didn’t think you’d come.”
“You know I have questions,” she shot back, sliding into the seat across from him. “About Beatrice’s will. You should be worried.”
“Worried? About what? You’re still pretending this matters?” he scoffed, a cruel smile curving his lips. “I have Lindsay now, and a baby.”
“This isn’t just about you and her,” Clara replied, her voice steady despite the storm inside her. “I know what Beatrice intended for me. This isn’t over, Owen.”
His eyes narrowed, disbelief flickering across his face. “What are you talking about?”
“Beatrice wanted me protected from you. She saw through your charm,” Clara asserted, leaning closer. “Did you know she planned to leave me a significant part of her estate?”
He paled, his bravado faltering. “You’re bluffing.”
“Am I?” she challenged, the rush of defiance fueling her. “I’ll expose everything—your lies, your secrets.”
For a moment, silence fell between them, heavy and suffocating. Then Owen leaned back, his smirk returning, as if he had regained control of the conversation. “You don’t know the whole story, Clara.”
Secrets and Legacies
Clara’s heartbeat quickened. “What is that supposed to mean?”
“Beatrice had her reasons for keeping you in the dark,” he said, his tone dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “You think this inheritance changes everything? It could destroy you more than you know.”
“What are you saying?” Clara demanded, feeling the ground shift beneath her. The weight of his words pressed on her chest.
“You were never meant to have it all,” Owen replied, leaning in. “There are things about her estate, and my family’s past, that will make your inheritance a curse, not a blessing.”
A chill ran down her spine. “You can’t threaten me with shadows, Owen.”
“But it’s the truth,” he said, a glint of triumph in his eyes. “Beatrice’s will originally included not just her estate but a considerable part of the Merritt family wealth, meant to put you at the center of our family, in direct conflict with me.”
Clara’s breath caught. “What?”
“Yes. That means you could leverage this against me, but think of the consequences,” he pressed. “It would shatter everything I’ve worked for—everything I inherited from her. Family ties are complicated, Clara.”
Stunned, Clara pulled back. Everything was unraveling, and she was standing on the precipice of a legacy she never envisioned. The power had shifted in ways she couldn’t yet grasp, but one thing was clear: the game had changed entirely.
