Pieces of Truth

“It’s not the time,” he replied, his voice strained.

“Not the time?” I echoed. “You need to tell me the truth! What has she done?”

Isabella stepped closer, her smirk growing. “Oh, it’s all here. Connections to people who’d rather see him destroyed than successful.”

The crowd buzzed with murmurs, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife. I found myself looking between Miles and Isabella, trying to piece together a narrative that wouldn’t shatter my world.

“You don’t know what she’s talking about,” Miles mumbled, but he didn’t sound convincing. His gaze darted to the door, and I realized he was trying to plan an escape.

But how could I escape this moment? The truth was circling us, tightening its grip. “Miles,” I whispered desperately, “you have to trust me.”

But trust was a luxury I wasn’t sure we had anymore. In that crowded room, with the lights glaring and the voices blending, I felt the walls closing in again, suffocating me.

Then Isabella opened the file, her lips curling into a consuming grin. “You’ll find everything you need to know inside,” she announced, the room falling silent as all eyes focused on us.

As she began to read, my heart raced faster with each word. “Miles, your company has been involved in dodgy deals with shady figures from the very beginning.”

I glanced at Miles, whose face was paling, realization dawning behind his eyes. “This isn’t true,” he muttered, but the tremor in his voice betrayed him.

“You’ve been living a lie, haven’t you?” Isabella pressed. “And now you’ve brought her into it.”

I felt like I was being pulled into the storm, helpless against the swirling chaos. The festive atmosphere of the gala had turned threatening, a trap closing in on the light.

Final Revelations

Then it happened—Isabella dropped the bomb. “And it seems Miles has made arrangements to pay off his mistakes. But pay attention, Sarah. If you think you’re just here for a show, think again.”

My breath hitched. “What do you mean?” I demanded.

“This wedding? It wasn’t just a publicity stunt. It included you, and you didn’t even know.”

The crowd titters, eyes darting between us. I could feel the heat of shame creeping up my neck. Miles stepped closer, trying to shield me from the scrutiny. “You don’t have to listen to her,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

But Isabella wasn’t finished. “She’s been used, Miles. Do you really think you’re protecting her from the truth?”

I felt the world narrowing. “Miles,” I said, my voice trembling, “is this true?”
