Unraveled Threads

The charity gala was only a week away, and the tension in the air had a palpable weight. Miles had promised to reveal the “truth” of our marriage, but I saw the way his hands trembled when he thought I wasn’t looking.

Victor, a business partner of Miles, had his eyes set on me, and I could feel the heat of his gaze lingering longer than necessary during meetings. He’d always been charming, but lately, it felt invasive.

“Bianca,” he said one evening, his voice smooth as silk. “You should come to the gala as Miles’ guest. What do you say?”

My heart sank. “He’s my husband, Victor. I’d prefer to stay out of the spotlight.” Miles had made his intentions clear, but Victor's persistence made me uneasy.

As the night of the gala arrived, anticipation buzzed like an electric current. I stood before the mirror, adjusting my hair, nervous energy bubbling inside me. The venue was a testament to wealth; the air thick with perfume and prestige.

When Miles and I entered, cameras flashed like paparazzi were hunting for scandal. And I held my breath as Miles stepped forward, gripping the mic tightly. “Tonight, I want to share something important.”

His gaze searched for mine as joy painted my heart, but fear lurked just behind. I felt Victor's eyes on me, calculated and waiting. And then Miles spoke the words I had longed to hear.

“This marriage isn’t just an arrangement. It’s real. Sarah is my wife.”

But just as the applause rolled through the crowd, the lights dimmed, and I sensed an impending storm.

Then, from the back of the room, another woman stepped forward. My heart dropped—there she was, Isabella, my husband's ex-fiancée, wearing a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.

Shattered Facades

“Thank you, Miles,” she said, her voice cutting through the applause. “But the truth needs to come out, doesn’t it? About your little arrangement.”

Gasps rippled through the crowd like the wind before a storm. I felt my stomach knot. “What do you mean?” I whispered, glancing at Miles, who looked like he had been punched.

Isabella smiled, stepping closer. “You see, I was never just the ex-fiancée. I had a purpose, and it involved a little more than love.”

Cameras shifted toward Miles, capturing the confusion and betrayal on his face, but the words were flying too fast for me to catch up. “I did things to protect you, Miles. You didn’t think it was just a coincidence that I left, did you?”

I was drowning in uncertainty. Who was this woman who claimed to know more than I did? “You lied to him?” I asked, taking a step forward.

“No, sweetheart, I saved him,” Isabella replied, eyes glinting with a satisfaction that made my skin crawl. “His empire is built on more than just tech. It’s built on secrets, and I took care of them for him.”

Each word unravelled the fabric of my life. A cold fear gripped me. “What are you saying?” I demanded, my voice barely above a whisper. “What secrets?”

Victor smirked from the sidelines, feeding off the chaos, while I tried to process what was happening. I could feel the walls closing in. My position suddenly felt so flimsy, like a house of cards.

“Tonight we stop hiding,” Isabella continued. “And I have proof.”

She pulled out a file from her bag, thick and bursting with papers. My heart raced. What could possibly be on those sheets? I wanted to scream, to run, but I was rooted to the spot.

“Miles,” I said, panic rising, “what is in that file?”
